The anticipation for the iPhone 15 lineup is building up, with Apple’s special event just around the corner, set to unveil the new phones later today at the Wonderlust Event.
One area where significant improvements are expected across all models is in the camera department, with the Pro Max model likely to receive the most substantial upgrades. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect from the cameras on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Same 48MP Sensor, new software tricks
It’s worth noting that both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are expected to retain the same 48MP Sony sensor that debuted with the iPhone 14 Pro.
This sensor allowed for capturing 12MP images with enhanced detail, thanks to pixel binning, as well as the ability to capture RAW photos at the sensor’s full resolution. While the hardware remains the same, Apple for sure has leveraged the new A17 chip to vastly improve post-processing, potentially resulting in slightly better-looking images. For instance, the iPhone 14 still relies on Smart HDR 4, which was introduced with the iPhone 13.
Periscope Lens on iPhone 15 Pro Max
In terms of zoom capabilities, both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are expected to receive new lenses. However, the iPhone 15 Pro will likely retain a 12MP telephoto lens, offering 3x optical zoom.
In contrast, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is set to feature a new periscope lens, enabling up to 6x optical zoom. Periscope lenses use a prism system to reflect light at a 90-degree angle, facilitating optical zoom.
However, they also demand more internal space within the phone, which is why this feature is likely to be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The upgraded 12MP telephoto lens on the regular Pro model should result in improved low-light photography.
Ultra-Wide Lens Upgrade Unclear
It remains unclear whether Apple will introduce significant changes to the ultra-wide lens on the new iPhones.
Improved Camera for iPhone 15 and 15 Plus
Interestingly, analysts suggest that Apple may finally introduce a 48MP wide sensor to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. This would effectively bring the advantages of the iPhone 14 Pro’s main camera to this year’s more affordable models, offering enhanced photography capabilities.
With these camera upgrades, the iPhone 15 series is expected to deliver improved photography experiences, catering to a wide range of user preferences and needs, from standard photography to advanced zoom capabilities.
