When it comes to laptops, thin and light may be the go-to form factor for a lot of people, but the usually skimp on good hardware or fail to optimise it, and therefore, leave a lot to be desired when it comes to performance. That is of course unless they cost you an arm and a leg. Moreover, even though a manufacturer may claim that a laptop is thin and light, in most cases, it actually isn’t — they weigh around 1.5 kg and sometimes even more than that. The Fujitsu FMV UH-X, though is a mighty exception to that.

Weighing in at just a hair under 878 gm, the Fujitsu FMV UH-X 14-inch is one of the lightest 14-inch laptops that I have ever tested. In fact, Fujitsu holds the record for making the lightest laptop in the world, which weighed an incredible 778 grams, for a 13.3-inch display laptop. Talk about being featherweight.

Don’t let the featherlight weight fool you though. The Fujitsu FMV UH-X 14-inch isn’t built like a delicate house of cards, and nor is it a sloppy performer. This device is a proper workhorse of a machine if you’re looking for a regular office laptop.

Fujitsu FMV UH-X 14-inch Review: Design & build quality
Most thin-and-light laptops offer a range of materials and finishes, but the Fujitsu FMV UH-X keeps things elegantly simple with its magnesium and carbon fibre materials. You can choose between a cool-looking all-black option, and a silver option both of which exude a premium appearance.

The laptop now sports a small logo tucked neatly in the corner of the lid. Apart from that, the entire surface is wonderfully pristine, free from any pesky fingerprints or smudges. Just to let you know, I went with the White Silver model for this review.

This laptop tips the scales at a manageable 878 gms and boasts a robust build that’s almost as tough as a tank. It features smoothly polished rounded edges and a similar finish on the lid, keyboard deck, and the underside of the chassis. These rounded edges ensure your palms won’t encounter any uncomfortable sharp edges when you’re using it.

The laptop comes equipped with a variety of ports to meet all your requirements. You’ll find two USB-4 Type-C ports that support Thunderbolt 4 and can handle power delivery tasks. Additionally, there are two USB 3.2 (Gen1) ports, one HDMI (for video output), an audio/microphone combo jack, a microSD slot, and even an Ethernet port. As for wireless connectivity, you get WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.

The laptop’s featherweight design can be attributed to the smart choice of materials in its construction. The laptop’s top part is crafted from carbon fibre, while the bottom features a magnesium-lithium alloy.

Even the keyboard is made from a robust yet lightweight magnesium alloy. Plus you get a super-slim bezel display boasting an impressive 93 percent screen-to-body ratio.

Fujitsu FMV UH-X 14-inch Review: Display
The Fujitsu UH-X features a 14-inch WUXGA anti-glare display, offering a resolution of 1920×1200, which is arranged in a 16:10 aspect ratio. This display is backed by LED backlighting, providing a dazzling brightness of 400 nits. It impressively covers 100 per cent of the sRGB colour spectrum and is also equipped with touch support.

The taller aspect ratio allows more content to fit on the screen, and the touch response is accurate and never felt lacking.

The panel’s hinge allows it to tilt up to 180 degrees, adding to its flexibility. One standout feature of this display is its ability to maintain vibrant colours even when viewed from off-centre angles. Furthermore, the thin bezels surrounding all four sides of the screen make this laptop remarkably compact compared to most other 14-inch laptops. It’s all about maximizing that screen real estate!

It is not an OLED panel, so the colours may seem a little muted at first compared to your smartphones, but trust me they look pretty vibrant and rich. I would happily colour-grade my photos on the display.

The only issue I have is that I think the display could be a bit brighter, especially when used under direct sunlight or in bright environments where the screen tends to reflect a lot.

Fujitsu FMV UH-X 14-inch Review: Keyboard and trackpad
The keyboard and trackpad layout on this laptop are thoughtfully designed. The keys on the keyboard is spaced out nicely. The keys on the keyboard are well-sized and offer a satisfying key travel distance. They also come with backlighting and make minimal noise even if you’re typing energetically. Overall, the typing experience is pretty solid.

Moreover, there’s a fingerprint scanner situated on the upper right side of the keyboard, which also doubles as the power button, adding a convenient touch.

While the keycaps and spacing on the keyboard are well-proportioned, I did notice that the switches beneath the keys feel a bit loose. Although the keystrokes are comfortable, especially during extended typing sessions, I personally would have preferred a bit more tactile feedback.

The trackpad is also quite good, albeit a small one by today’s standards. It supports multi-touch gestures and offers precise tracking.

The best bit is that it has got two dedicated buttons for left and right clicks. I know this looks and feels a bit old-school, but it is very functional, and something that I really enjoy using, I also like that they placed the click buttons at the bottom of the trackpad.

Fujitsu FMV UH-X 14-inch Review: Webcam and speakers
This laptop comes equipped with a pair of stereo speakers that project sound towards the bottom. These speakers are decent and can get quite loud, but not loud enough to fill a room. The audio also lacks a decent punch and bass, it falls a bit short, even though it’s Dolby Atmos certified.

On the bright side, dialogues and vocals come through pretty clearly. If your plan involves watching a lot of content and relying on the built-in speakers for audio, they’ll do the job, but they won’t exactly blow you away. As for mics, you get two digital mics and AI-based noise cancelling.

As for the webcam, it is an FHD camera, which is pretty solid for a laptop at this price range. You also get a privacy shutter and a ton of AI features. The webcam is pretty solid and does the job as well as you can realistically expect. It was more than sufficient for general video calls and online meetings. You also get Windows Hello for unlocking the device using your face.

Fujitsu FMV UH-X 14-inch Review: Specs, performance and features
The unit that Lenovo, now the owner of Fujitsu, sent us is armed with some seriously impressive hardware under the hood. It boasts a Core i7 1360P processor, 16GB of high-speed LPDDR5 RAM clocked at 6400 MT/s, and a zippy 512GB PCIe M.2 SSD.

Now, let’s break down the Core i7 1360P a bit – it’s composed of 4 Performance cores and 8 Efficiency cores and has a generous 18MB cache. The Performance cores can reach a maximum turbo frequency of 5.00GHz, while the Efficiency cores can hit up to 3.70GHz.

For our benchmarking and testing, we decided to go all out with the highest performance settings to really put this machine to the test.

For your everyday user, the Fujitsu UH-X should do the job quite nicely. What’s particularly impressive about this notebook is that it doesn’t heat up even during extended use, thanks to Fujitsu’s efficient cooling system.

In terms of performance benchmarks, here’s how it performed: On the CrossMark benchmark, the laptop achieved a total score of 1700 points, breaking down into 1602 points in productivity, 1910 in creativity, and 1409 points in responsiveness.

Meanwhile, on Geekbench 6, it notched up 2418 points for single-core performance and a robust 9619 points for multi-core CPU performance.

The Core i7 1360P shines in both lightweight, single-threaded tasks and more demanding multi-threaded tasks. It handles day-to-day tasks impressively and breezes through most tasks that a typical user would throw at it. Throughout our testing, we encountered no lag or performance concerns whatsoever.

In terms of graphics performance, it holds up quite well considering it relies on onboard graphics. It’s more than capable of everyday activities like watching videos and basic photo editing. However, if you’re into heavy gaming, heavy-duty 3D work, or video editing, it might not be the best choice due to its Intel Iris Xe graphics, which can’t quite match dedicated GPUs in those scenarios.

Fujitsu FMV UH-X 14-inch Review: Battery
The battery performance of the FMV UH-X 14-inch is actually quite impressive and offers long-lasting power. It packs a 4-cell, 64Wh battery and includes a Type-C charger. On average, I found that the laptop’s battery can last just a little over 10 hours with regular use. And when you do need to recharge it, it can juice up to 80 per cent in about 60 minutes, which is pretty efficient.

In a typical scenario where you’re doing a mix of tasks like writing, some photo editing, and streaming videos on platforms like YouTube and Netflix, with the screen brightness set at 80 per cent, you can expect the laptop’s battery to hold up for around 8 hours before you get a 20 per cent battery remaining alert. This should cover you for a good portion of the day without needing to plug in.

Fujitsu FMV UH-X 14-inch Review: Verdict
The Fujitsu FMV UH-X 14-inch is a dependable and no-nonsense device that truly shines due to the performance it offers, in the package that it offers in. When you compare it to other thin-and-light options with similar capabilities, you’ll find that they often come with a much higher price tag.

The Fujitsu UH-X 14-inch not only meets the criteria for an excellent thin-and-light notebook but also goes beyond expectations by delivering remarkable performance and battery life. If you’re in the market for a thin-and-light laptop in the range of around Rs 100,000, the Fujitsu UH-X is definitely worth considering. It offers a compelling package that combines portability, performance, and cost-effectiveness.

While it may not be the flashiest or most stylish laptop out there, it is a reliable workhorse that can handle a wide range of tasks that a regular user might throw at it. Its performance and battery life are quite impressive for its price, making it a reliable choice for both work and personal use
