India Semicon: US chip maker Applied Materials, Juniper Networks look to set up shop in Karnataka

In an ongoing series of meetings aimed at attracting investment from the United States, M.B. Patil, the Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development in Karnataka, has engaged with prominent players in the industry.

Notably, US-based chip manufacturer Applied Materials is currently in the process of seeking approval to establish a research and development (R&D) lab in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

This development underscores the region’s growing appeal as a hub for cutting-edge technology and innovation. Applied Materials is actively pursuing the establishment of a Center of Excellence for Innovation and an R&D lab in the Whitefield area of Bengaluru.

During discussions with government officials, the company expressed the need for support from local authorities and emphasized the importance of streamlining the pre-construction approval process for their lab.

The meeting also touched on critical aspects related to the semiconductor ecosystem, such as chemicals and gases, as well as measures to facilitate a conducive business environment.

Applied Materials had recently unveiled plans to invest $400 million over the next four years in the creation of an engineering centre in Bengaluru, marking a significant commitment to the region’s technological advancement.

As part of these endeavours, M.B. Patil and his delegation visited Applied Materials’ Maydan Technology Centre, dedicated to the development of advanced chip-making technologies.

In addition to Applied Materials, San Francisco-headquartered Juniper Networks Inc. is exploring opportunities to expand its footprint in Karnataka.

This includes the exploration of hardware manufacturing facilities and enhancing research and development capabilities. Juniper Networks, which currently operates the largest data centre in Karnataka, employing 4,000 individuals, is seeking to further strengthen its presence in the state.

Discussions with Juniper Networks extended beyond business interests and also encompassed plans for sustainable energy integration into their operations. The government and the company are collaboratively working towards establishing a Center of Excellence focused on design and wireless products by March 2024.

Additionally, the conversation highlighted corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, with a focus on skill development in rural areas and collaborative efforts to provide training in critical areas such as data science, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and cybersecurity.

These discussions and initiatives demonstrate the commitment of Karnataka to fostering innovation, technology, and economic growth in partnership with influential players in the industry.
