Apple Pencil: Apple launches entry-level Pencil with USB-C charging for iPads; Check all details here

Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is set to make waves in the world of tablet accessories with the release of its more affordable Apple Pencil, now featuring a USB-C connector and magnetic attachment capabilities.

Priced at Rs 7,900, the newly unveiled iPad accessory is designed to cater to a wider audience and enhance the user experience on various iPad models, including the 10th-generation iPad released last year.

What is new with the USB-C Apple Pencil?
The USB-C Apple Pencil, scheduled for release in early November, stands out with its innovative design, as it includes a sliding cap that reveals the USB-C port, streamlining the charging process for users. Additionally, the stylus attaches magnetically to the side edge of an iPad, ensuring it won’t easily roll off a table.

While the reduced price point is enticing, it’s worth noting that the USB-C Apple Pencil does not offer some of the advanced features found in the first- and second-generation models. Notably, it lacks support for pressure sensitivity, wireless pairing, wireless charging, or the double-tap feature that facilitates tool switching. However, it still supports hover functionality when used with the M2 models of the iPad Pro.

In the past, the first-generation Apple Pencil used a Lightning connector, which protruded from the stylus for charging purposes. In contrast, the second-generation model introduced wireless charging but was incompatible with the 10th-generation iPad released by Apple last year, creating some confusion among iPad accessory users.

How compatible is the new Pencil with the current iPads?
The USB-C Apple Pencil, though, addresses these compatibility issues and is compatible with a range of iPad models, including the third- to sixth-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the first- to fourth-generation 11-inch iPad Pro, the fourth- and fifth-generation iPad Air, the 10th-gen iPad, and the sixth-gen iPad Mini. This broad compatibility aims to make the stylus more accessible to a wider user base.

Apple’s latest offering follows the 2018 release of the Apple Pencil 2, which represented a substantial upgrade over the original model. This second-generation stylus introduced key features such as wireless charging and magnetic attachment capabilities to supported iPads.

It also brought gesture controls for tasks like switching between tools, enhancing the user experience. However, these improvements came at a premium price, with the Apple Pencil 2, which retails for Rs 11,900.
Apple has been overdue for some iPad updates. The 10th-generation iPad launched in October 2022, iPad Pros equipped with M2 chips, the iPad Air with an M1 chip in March 2022, and the redesigned iPad Mini in September 2021.

The USB-C Apple Pencil is priced at $79 and will be available for purchase in India starting in early November at the Apple India online store and Apple retail stores. Education pricing for the stylus is set at an even more budget-friendly Rs 6,900, making it accessible for students and educators alike.
