In a recent development, billionaire Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Inc. and owner of the social media platform X, has come under fire for endorsing an antisemitic post on his platform. The post, which targeted members of the Jewish community, accused them of promoting “dialectical hatred” against white people.
Musk’s endorsement of the post was evident in his reply, where he expressed agreement, stating, “You have said the actual truth.” This incident adds to a series of controversies surrounding Musk’s online behavior, particularly in relation to content attacking Jewish people.
Last year, Musk faced criticism from the American Jewish Committee, an advocacy organization, after he deleted a tweet that drew a satirical comparison between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Adolf Hitler. The committee called on Musk to apologize for his actions.
Earlier this year, Musk blamed the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for a significant drop in advertising revenue on X, the social platform previously known as Twitter. According to Musk, ad sales were down by 60 per cent, attributing the decline to pressure on advertisers by the ADL. Despite defending himself as “pro free speech” and against antisemitism, Musk’s actions have raised concerns.
Responding to a user on X who argued against making generalizations about Jewish communities, Musk acknowledged the nuance but asserted that the issue extended beyond the ADL. He expressed being “deeply offended” by the ADL’s messaging and criticized any groups promoting what he described as “de facto anti-white racism or anti-Asian racism or racism of any kind.”
The controversy comes at a time when antisemitism is reportedly on the rise in the United States, with FBI Director Christopher Wray noting in a recent Senate hearing that it has reached “historic levels,” as reported by CNN. Musk’s endorsement of antisemitic content adds to the ongoing debate about responsible use of social media platforms and the role of prominent figures in addressing hate speech.
