Here’s how to disable some of iOS 16’s most annoying features and get the most out of your iOS devices

Apple’s latest operating system for its mobile devices, iOS 16 has some great new features and updates, like a customisable lock screen, password-protected photo albums,  or the ability to unsend and edit already sent text messages.

However, there are a few areas where Apple dropped the ball and failed to improve certain functionalities that had been integrated into iOS a long time back. These features, although preferred by some people, are largely found to be annoying by most.

Here’s how to disable some of iOS 16’s annoying features and get the most out of your iOS devices

One of the most annoying new feature, at least for us, has been the redesigned notifications that now appear at the bottom of your lock screen. That is Apple trying to reinvent the wheel - something that no one asked for and was simply not necessary.

Luckily, for a few of these features, Apple’s iOS 16 allows users to deactivate or turn them off. We take a look at a few of these features and how to revert them back to their previous versions, or how to turn them off completely.

Going back to the old style of lock screen notifications.

This is one of the most unnecessary changes that Apple has brought about. Instead of appearing at the top of your lock screen, notifications now appear at the bottom, which you can then tap on to appear full screen.

If you want to go back to how notifications appeared on iOS 15, launch the Settings application and go to Notifications then Display As. From the options that you see, select the List option, to go back to the old notification style.

Preventing the lock/unlock button from ending phone calls.

The power button on your iPhones can be used to decline calls. While this may seem to be a nice feature to have, accidentally hitting it while you are on a call will end the call abruptly. This is a feature that you may want to turn off.

In Settings, go to Accessibility, then Touch and toggle off Lock to End Call to prevent the side button from ending your calls. This way, even if you hit the button while you’re on a call, your screen will either light up or will go to sleep, but it won’t interfere with your call.

Stopping Featured Photos and Memories from popping up

“Memories” or Featured Photos is a novelty feature that no one really cares for. More often than not, the images that pop up automatically, are private, and sometimes embarrassing. As great as Apple’s AI is, it sometimes showcases some of the more rather inappropriate images that we have on our phones, which, can be very embarrassing.

Fortunately, with iOS 16, you can now prevent Featured Photos from appearing in photo widgets on your home screen and the Search and For You sections in Photos.

Just launch the Settings app, go into Photos and toggle off Show Featured Content. All featured content will no longer appear on your device, just in your photo library and albums.

Removing the search button from your home screen.

The Search feature on your iPhone allows you to quickly look up things, whether it's a text message, a third-party app, a file, a note or even a quick internet search.

iOS 16 has added another way to access Search from the home screen, via a small button right above your dock. Unfortunately, it's easy to accidentally trigger, because it's near where your thumb might go when you swipe between your various home pages.

To disable this, launch the Settings app, go to Home Screen and toggle off Show on Home Screen under the Search section to remove the search button from your home screen.

OnePlus 10T to ditch the brand’s Alert Slider, and its Hasselblad partnership

OnePlus is gearing up to launch its flagship for the year 2022, the OnePlus 10T. At least on paper, the device should be the best device that OnePlus will be launching this year, with some of the best features and top-notch specifications.

OnePlus 10T to ditch the brand’s Alert Slider, and its Hasselblad Partnership

However, as per a few reports around the upcoming OnePlus 10T, OnePlus may be planning to get rid of one of its most iconic features that sets it apart from most other Android devices - its alert slider.

From the original OnePlus One, the brand’s smartphones have almost always included a slider on the side of the device which was used to switch between ringer modes. Called the “Alert Slider,” this switch could move between vibrate, mute, and full volume modes, much like the iPhone’s Mute Switch.

This is a feature that has become the mainstay of all OnePlus flagships, and a wider range of its non-flagship devices. There have been a few smartphones that such as the OnePlus Nord N20 that did not get the Alert Slider, but by and large, this has been a very common feature on OnePlus devices.

The revelation came alongside the first images that OnePlus shared, which took a look at the design of the OnePlus 10T, which has a light green colour alongside a black option. The OnePlus 10T looks almost the same as the OnePlus 10 Pro which was released earlier this year.

Hope Liu, OnePlus’ Chief Designer, explained that the move was necessary in order to place other key components on the device. This includes a much bigger battery, hardware for even faster charging, and a better and stronger antenna. The Alert Slider takes up around 30 mm² on the motherboard, which has a relatively large impact on building the device, as per Liu.

OnePlus 10T to ditch the brand’s Alert Slider, and its Hasselblad Partnership

Another reason why the slider was removed, was to make the device much more stronger. In a number of durability tests by reviewers and YouTubers, it was found that the OnePlus 10 Pro snapped right where the Alert Slider was placed. This may be a coincidence, but we’re pretty sure that OnePlus may not be willing to take that risk again.

In another major development, OnePlus’ partnership with Hasselblad has been dropped. As a result, the top-tier variant of the OnePlus 10T will not be carrying the Hasselblad branding as some of the previous flagships used to.

OnePlus, in a statement said that they “wanted to offer an ultimate performance flagship smartphone at the device’s chosen price point,” but the brand also confirmed that it will still use a 50MP Sony IMX766 as its primary sensor, technically a slight upgrade from the 10 Pro.

How AI and Machine Learning are bringing price transparency to the Indian Real Estate sector

The emergence of AI and Machine Learning has brought a paradigm shift in the real estate sector. With their integrated AI and Machine Learning equipped model, online real estate marketplaces are the most promising futuristic concepts that are undoubtedly helping the real estate sector.

How AI and Machine Learning are bringing price transparency to the Indian Real Estate sector

It is a given that these are the most practical tools for property valuation, trend analysis, and price forecasting. To determine the ideal pricing range, AI and Machine Learning employ a regression model that considers property parameters such as size, number of rooms, property age, house quality characteristics, and macroeconomic demographics. As a result, AI algorithms can forecast pricing depending on geography or future development.

In 2020, 53% of real estate corporations directly invested in technology, according to the University of Oxford's research, Technology and The Future of Real Estate Investment Management. While 56 per cent of Statist respondents have already recognized the tech industry's impact, 42% of respondents admitted they see potential in intelligent building technology.

Additionally, AI and Machine Learning allow large pipelines of algorithms to be integrated with valuable social data such as logistics, social amenities & public utilities, rainfall rates, sunlight availability, automobile intensity, pollution levels, recreational activities in the district, and much more to provide more precise and accurate insight into the real estate market. Though AI has made the property selling and buying process easier, it's not just limited to that. The main and most important thing is that AI and Machine Learning have made the home value estimate more accurate and convenient, resulting in greater transparency throughout the buying process.

Furthermore, tech integrations like these offer more than just transparency in the home buying experience. For example, AI and ML have played a part in easing the home search for customers, from listings online to recommending properties to consumers.

Finally, one of the essential abilities that real estate brokers rely on is AI's capacity to "predict" the future. For example, it is beneficial when estimating property values and rental rates. In this scenario, the AI model might gather information from public records, alternate routes, crime statistics, and school district estimations to generate a specific region value analysis.

Implementing AI will positively influence efficiency, management costs, transparency, and, most crucially, asset valuation. The artificial intelligence revolution has unquestionably arrived and is here to stay. AI in real estate will transform the whole property buying and selling process, providing consumers with relevant information in the most transparent way.

Future real estate transactions will be automated and computerized. Artificial intelligence and Machine Learning are becoming more common in our daily lives as their use gets more affordable. Real estate agents won't have anything to worry about once they understand how to use the immense power of technology for their gain, as it streamlines the whole property buying and selling process, providing consumers with relevant information in a most transparent way.

Best phones under Rs 15,000 (July 2022): Oppo K10, Redmi Note 11 to Motorola G31

All the handsets from our previous list of phones under Rs 15,000 were eligible for inclusion in this list too. Most of them are still going strong, but a few new contenders have arrived and have managed to displace some of the old guard. Other than phones with 50MP cameras, we also have a few 5G ready phones in this budget now.

Infinix-Note-12-5G-series-to-launch-in-India-with-108MP-Camera-check-other-specs-and-price

As we generally do, we have opted for handsets with 6 GB RAM, and you also have some options with AMOLED screens or high refresh rate displays or even both. Time to look at who made the cut this month.

Best phones to buy under Rs 15,000 in India

Oppo K10
The Oppo K10 comfortably retains its place in our list courtesy of its well-rounded feature set for this segment starting with an IP5X rated dust-proof design. It sports a 6.59-inch Full HD+ display with a 90 Hz refresh rate. Oppo has opted for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chip, which is a very good choice in this budget. It is accompanied by 6 GB RAM and 128 GB of internal storage that can be expanded further using a microSD card. This phone runs Android 11 with ColorOS 11.

Oppo-K10

The photography department is helmed by a 50MP primary camera that does most of the heavy lifting. Giving it company are a 2MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro camera. The 16MP front camera is pretty good at handling selfies and video calls. The Oppo K10 has a 5000 mAh battery that keeps it running for more than a day and a half of moderate use. The company also bundles a 33W SuperVOOC charger to juice it up briskly.

Oppo K10 price in India: Rs 14,990 for 6 GB RAM/ 128 GB storage

Oppo A74 5G
And there’s another Oppo phone in this list. I don’t remember seeing two handsets from the company in the same list under 15K prior to this. This option is specifically for those who want a 5G ready phone. The Oppo A74 5G is one of the most affordable 5G phones around. There is nothing flashy about its spec-sheet, but just like the K10, it has most of the key bases covered. This too runs Android 11 with ColorOS 11.

Oppo A74 5G (1)

You get a 6.5-inch Full HD+ LCD display with a 90 Hz refresh rate. This too comes with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage, however, you get a Snapdragon 480 SoC instead of 680 here. The rear camera department has quad cameras with a combination of a 48MP primary shooter, along with an 8MP ultra-wide camera (missing in the K10), 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. The Oppo A74 5G has a 5000 mAh battery that lasts as long but supports 18W fast charging.

Infinix Note 12 5G
Infinix as a brand has been quite impressive this year and has been consistently making it to our list of budget phones. The Infinix Note 12 5G is one of the latest from the company to catch our eye. It sports a large 6.7-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a 90 Hz refresh rate. Even better, this phone is powered by a Mediatek Dimensity 810 SoC, which is a great option in this segment and easily the most powerful in this list. You get 6 GB RAM and 64 GB of internal storage that can be expanded further using a microSD card.

In the photography department, you get a 50MP primary camera and a 2MP depth sensor along with an AI lens. The 16MP front camera is adept at handling selfies and video calls. The Infinix Note 12 5G has a 5000 mAh battery that should keep it running for close to a day and a half of moderate use. It supports 33W fast charging. This Infinix phone runs the latest Android 12 with XOS 10.6 UI. Did I mention this device is less than 8 mm in thickness?

Infinix Note 12 5G price in India: Rs 14,999 for 6 GB RAM/ 64 GB storage

Motorola G31
The Motorola G31 holds on to its place in our list thanks to its impressive features and UI, and is now available under 14K. It has a 6.4-inch Full HD+ AMOLED screen, but with standard 60 Hz refresh rate. This phone has a 50MP primary camera at the back, along with an 8MP ultrawide shooter and a 2MP macro camera. A 13MP selfie camera is located in a tiny punch hole at the top of the screen. The phone has a water-repellent design which is ideal for this season. It doesn’t have an IP rating though.

Motorola G31

The Moto G31 is powered by a Mediatek Helio G85 chip that is decent enough for day to day operations. It is accompanied by 6 GB RAM and 128 GB internal (expandable) storage. Battery backup is quite good with a 5000 mAh battery keeping the phone powered for over a day and a half of moderate use. And last but not the least, like most Motorola phones, the G31 has a clean and near-stock Android user interface. It runs Android 11 and one can expect an Android 12 update later this year.

Motorola G31 price in India: Rs 13,999 for 6 GB RAM/ 128 GB storage

Redmi Note 11
The Redmi Note 11 is another good allrounder in this segment with an impressive display. It has a 6.43-inch Full HD+ AMOLED screen with a 90 Hz refresh rate that flaunts a peak brightness of 1000 nits. The screen is protected against scratches by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Just like the K10, this phone too is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 SoC with 6 GB RAM, but the internal storage stands at 64 GB, and can be expanded further with the memory card.

Redmi-Note-11

The Redmi Note 11 has four cameras at the back starting with a 50MP primary camera, along with an 8MP ultra-wide shooter, 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. You get a more than decent 13MP front camera for selfies and video calls. This phone too has a 5000 mAh battery that keeps the phone powered for close to a day and a half of moderate use. The bundled 33W fast charger promises to charge it fully in an hour. The phone runs Android 11 with MIUI 13.

Motorola’s Moto Razr 2022 may be delayed with no clear timeline for launch

Motorola has a couple of devices lined up for launch in the next couple of months that has many people within the tech community excited. First of all, there is the upcoming Moto Edge X30 series, which has been codenamed the Moto Frontier. Then there was the Moto Razr 2022.

Motorola’s Moto Razr 2022 may be delayed, with no clear timeline for launch

Now though, reports are coming out from prominent Chinese tech journalists that the launch of Razr 2022 may have been delayed, with no clear timeline for the device’s launch.

Motorola is expected to bring the Moto Edge X30 Pro and the Moto Edge 30 Ultra smartphone sometime this month or in the month of August. The flagship series is said to feature a 200MP camera, becoming the first smartphone maker to do so, beating Samsung and their 200MP smartphone camera.

Motorola had planned to launch or at least unveil the final version of the Razr 2022 during the event, but now, it seems that it is highly unlikely. A few weeks ago, Lenovo Mobile China’s General Manager, Chen Jin, took to the Chinese social media network, Weibo, with some photos of the Moto Razr 2022. The dump of photos includes images of both the closed phone as well as the open phone.

The device which was shown in those photos was a prototype, and not the final, ready-to-be shipped product. Reports suggest that Motorola is still fine-tuning the software and working on some bugs.

The Moto Razr 2022 was confirmed already by company officials to be powered by a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. We expect little change in the overall design, but an even bigger cover screen and improved cameras - 50MP main and 32MP on the inside.

The first smart Razr arrived in fall 2019, followed by a 5G version in 2022. However, none of the phones had true flagships internals as opposed to their rivals from Samsung, which could have contributed to the limited sales they saw. The device also had a very limited production run and wasn’t readily available. Obviously, the very limited availability was the main culprit behind its numbers. Still, the phones had their fair share of fans.

Whether or not this will continue with the Razr 2022, remains to be seen when the new version eventually arrives.

New Apple patent suggests iPhones could get feature lasers adding more biometric capabilities

As per a recent patent filing with the US Patent & Trademark Office, Apple is planning and working on adding an array of tiny lasers to upcoming iPhones and Apple Watches, which could have big implications for smartphone development and overall security.

New Apple patent suggests iPhones could get feature lasers adding more biometric capabilities

As per the patent that has been filed by Apple, the tech giant is working with horizontal cavity surface-emitting lasers or HCSEL. The technology would essentially allow for an array of HCSELs to be placed underneath the display to monitor biometrics and other environmental factors. There are plenty of other applications for HCSELs, and the potential for developers to explore the technology could result in a wave of new features on your iPhone and Apple Watch.

Such kinds of input and world reading options give developers even more tools to work with. Irrespective of what Apple has in mind for using the HCSEL lasers, the new array of lasers will allow developers to come up with some really interesting stuff.

Apple’s patent would suggest that its main goal is to add enhanced security features. This basically means that there is a very strong possibility that we may get to see TouchID being reinstated on Apple’s devices in a much better way. The lasers could allow Apple to come up with their own system of under-the-display fingerprint scanners, that would be much more reliable and secure.

The patent also claims that the new array of lasers could be used to monitor the quality of air. As a company based in California, where wildfires are a growing public health issue, Apple is no stranger to how air quality can affect your well-being. The ability to glance down at your Apple Watch and get up-to-date air quality data specific to your exact location (as opposed to generalized numbers from a third-party database) could be a staple feature in smartwatches moving forward as much of the western United States contends with inhospitable air conditions.

Apple’s patent could, theoretically, let its products alert you when the air you’re breathing is unhealthy and recommend you take your workout indoors. With air quality a rising concern of scientists and citizens, the feature is bound to get a lot of use.

Nikon India showcases the Nikon Z 30, positions it as the ideal camera for vloggers and content creators

Nikon India recently showcased the latest camera in their line of mirrorless cameras, the Z 30. The legacy camera maker is positioning the compact mirrorless camera as the ideal camera for vloggers, and the gateway camera for amateur content creators, who feel they are limited by their smartphone cameras, and who want to get into serious filmmaking.

Nikon India showcases the Nikon Z 30, positions it as the ideal camera for vloggers and content creators

The Z 30 is compact and easily portable for the backpack or handbag, making it perfect for a vloggers or a content creator's essential everyday carry kit. The camera comes with its prominently placed built-in microphone, a movie-record indicator light – the REC lamp that notifies of recording in progress, auto switch to self-portrait mode.

Speaking on the occasion of the Z 30’s showcase, Sajjan Kumar, Managing Director of Nikon India said, "We are elated to showcase our feature packed, compact and lightweight newest Z 30 mirrorless camera designed specifically for young content creators, vloggers, and streamers. Z 30 is the epitome of creativity and is poised to attract the interest of young and ardent photography enthusiasts. We are confident that our new Nikon Z 30 gives creators the ability to easily produce the kind of video content that gets noticed.”

Despite its small form factor, the device packs a serious punch, mainly because it has some features that may make its potential switch over to a full-fledged camera instead of relying on their smartphones. For starters, it uses Nikon’s Z-mount, which allows content creators to go for a wide range of lenses and try their hands at some serious filmmaking.

Secondly, the 20.9MP APS-C sensor allows vloggers and content creators with much more pixels and resolution to play with than even the best camera phones can provide. Furthermore, you don’t have to deal with pixel binning, you get much bigger sized pixels, and a much better dynamic range, which would make post-production or editing of your videos much more fun.

The Z 30 is capable upto 4K videos at 30FPS, without any cropping, and can shoot at 1080p at upto 120FPS. Taking cinematic shots with this camera sure ought to be fun.

It also increases the scope of what you can do in editing, exponentially. The APS-C sensor comes with a 1.5X zoom-in factor over a full-frame sensor, so users can get better zoomed-in and tighter framing of their subjects.

One of the best things about the Z 30 is its ability to shoot constantly for 125 minutes, provided you don’t run out of storage. Seriously, try doing that with any smartphone and see what sorts of issues you run into.

The Nikon Z 30 starts at Rs 59,895 for the body only. For a basic starter kit, that is the body, a 16-50mm f3.5-6.3, and a 64GB UHS-I SD Card, you'll need to shell out about Rs. 73,495.
