Nothing Phone (1) will initially be sold through an invite system in most countries, won't be sold in US at all

There are a lot of similarities between how Carl Pei is operating his new venture Nothing Company, and his previous venture, OnePlus. For starters, the first smartphones from both of these manufacturers had immense around them.

Nothing has run a OnePlus-like teaser campaign for its upcoming Phone (1), revealing small (or big) tidbits of information here and there every other day, ensuring it stays in the news cycle for weeks.

Nothing Phone (1) will initially be sold through an invite system in most countries

Another similarity between the initial days of OnePlus and Nothing Company is that their first device will be sold through an invite system at least in a number of countries initially.

Love it or hate it, it was undeniably unique when it made its debut with the OnePlus One, and the Nothing Phone (1) will "initially" be sold through invites only. Say what you will but Carl Pei, is among the best marketers and hype builders in the mobile space.

The invite system will seemingly allow Nothing to sell its products faster since it won't wait until it accumulated a lot of phones in stock in order to start shipping them. It will also make sure the first people who get a Phone (1) are those "in the community", the "people who deserve it the most". Once "they're happy", the company is "more than happy to open wider."

In other news, Nothing Phone (1) will not be launched in the US. No North American carrier was on the supported list that we saw yesterday when 100 limited edition units were put up for auction.

Here is what the company had to say: “While we’d love to bring the Phone (1) to the entire community around the world, we’re focusing on home markets, including the UK and Europe, where we have strong partnerships with leading local carriers. It takes a lot to launch a smartphone as you know, from ensuring the handset is supported by the country’s cellular technologies to carrier partnerships and local regulation, and as we’re still a young brand we need to be strategic about it.”

Nothing Phone (1) will initially be sold through an invite system in most countries

Nothing Company has plans to launch a smartphone in the US sometime in the future. However, it will need to get at least one major carrier on board first. Carl Pei’s OnePlus had done it before. OnePlus 6 was the first from his former company to be sold in the US and Canada.

Apple CEO Tim Cook hints that their AR headset may launch sooner than expected

Earlier there were rumours that Apple would be launching their AR glasses sometime in 2024. Now though it seems that the launch is much nearer than what people had expected.

In a recent interview with, Apple CEO Tim Cook, that they are planning to enter the AR and VR space, and has asked Apple enthusiasts to stay tuned to what Apple will offer in the space.

Apple CEO Tim Cook hints that their AR headset may launch sooner than expected

Tim Cook revealed in an interview with the China Daily USA, that the company has launched over 14,000 ARkit apps in the App Store, which provide AR experiences for millions of people around the world.

“I could not be more excited about the opportunities in the space. Sort of stay tuned and you will see what we have to offer,” said Tim Cook in the interview. “Right now, as an example, we have over 14,000 ARKit apps in the App Store which provide AR experiences for millions of people around the world,” he continued. “But I think despite that, we’re still in the very early innings of how this technology will evolve.”

“I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunities we’ve seen in this space,” said Cook, “and sort of stay tuned, and you’ll see what we have to offer.”

Apple will be launching their upcoming headset with a number of highly sensitive 3D sensing modules and offer better hand tracking. The light sensors will be able to detect objects that users hold and will be comparable to how Apple’s FaceID works and senses facial expressions.

The headset will be equipped with two processors. One will have the same computing level as Apple’s M1 chipset, and one will be slightly less powered, which will handle input from the different sensors.

Apple’s new AR headset will come with at least 6-8 optical modules to provide continuous video see-through AR services. Apple has also partnered with TSMC to develop “ultra-advanced” micro OLED displays for “upcoming augmented reality devices.”

Apple’s headset will mainly focus on gaming and media consumption. It will be somewhat similar to the Oculus Quest headset although Apple will be giving the headset its own touches, design-wise.

Explained: Government’s new star rating for ACs and what it means for manufacturers and buyers

The Government of India will be implementing new energy rating rules for air conditioners from July 1. The new ratings will be in continuation of BEE or Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s notification of the new parameters regarding the implementation of the revised energy consumption standards for ACs in the country.

Explained_ Government’s new star rating for ACs and what it means for buyers, users and more

The new rules mean higher energy efficiency guidelines for 5-star models, and as a result, AC prices are set to go up by at least 10 per cent.

Once the new star ratings come into effect, the existing ACs' energy ratings will go down by one star. Therefore, a 5-star AC purchased this summer will be equivalent to a 4-star from next month. There is also a slight change in the ratings of window and split ACs.

AC manufacturers will be required to change the designs of their units. These changes include new or revised parameters like increasing airflow, the surface area of copper tubes and having a more efficient compressor to increase their energy efficiency.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) was originally scheduled to change the energy rating norms for ACs in January 2022. The same was delayed as manufacturers had requested BEE to delay it by six months so that they could clear the last two years' inventory which was impacted due to the Covid lockdown.

Basically, this means that ACs produced keeping the new parameters and new energy ratings in mind will be at least 7-10 per cent more expensive for manufacturers, a cost which will be passed on to the consumers.

The next change in the rating norms for AC is scheduled to be announced in 2025. The new energy ratings that will come into effect from July 1 will be applicable till December 2024.

In an announcement earlier this month, BEE said that there will be no change in star ratings for frost-free and direct cool refrigerators this year. However, from next year, that is January 2023, the energy ratings of refrigerators too will be revised. Consequently, prices of higher-rated refrigerators too will go up.

India's latest communication satellite GSAT-24 built by ISRO for NewSpace India Limited launched successfully

The GSAT-24 satellite, built by ISRO for NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), was successfully launched on Thursday by French company Arianespace from Kourou in French Guiana (South America).

The launch was delayed by several minutes. The Ariane-5, launch vehicle from Arianespace, lifted off and put into orbit GSAT-24. According to reports, the lift-off was scheduled for 2:30 am on Thursday, the mission had a launch window between 2:30 am and 4:13 am on 23 June IST (India Standard Time).

Around 2:28 am IST, Arianespace made an announcement that "complementary checks have postponed the lift-off by a few minutes in the launch window".

The hosts on the firm's dedicated channel announced a 15-minute delay but didn't mention on the cause. After a break it said that an anomaly was detected post the filling of the tanks and that it had been fixed and the lift-off was scheduled for 3:20 am.

The Ariane-5 lifted-off exactly at 3:20 am.

Weighing 4,180 kg, GSAT-24 is a 24-Ku band communication satellite with pan-India coverage for meeting DTH application needs.

It was the first "demand driven" communication satellite mission undertaken by NSIL post space sector reforms.

NSIL, a Government of India company under the Department of Space, has leased the entire satellite capacity to Tata Play.

GSAT-24 was launched on-board Ariane-V VA257 flight from the Guiana Space Centre, Europe's spaceport in Kourou.

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV Review: An impressive Google TV for a sizable premium

Pros:
- Good colour reproduction and contrast
- Variety of input/output ports
- Dual band WiFi
- Latest version of Google TV
- Works with Alexa-enabled smart devices too
- Access to picture and sound adjustments on the fly

Cons:
- HD Ready, not Full HD
- Expensive
- Dated TV design, cluttered remote

Overall Rating: 3.8/5

Price: Rs 28,990

With so many budget smart TV brands plying their trade in India, at times one tends to forget that the big boys are still around. And what’s more, they are present in the most popular 32-inch segment too! Sony served us a timely reminder of that with the recently launched W830K series. As expected, it carries a premium price tag with the promise of a superior picture quality and performance. But does it do enough to change mindsets? Let’s find out.

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV Review Lead image

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV - Design and connectivity: 7.5/10
Sony hasn’t bothered going bezel-less and opted for a more classical design with narrow but distinct bezels on all four sides. Though there is nothing glaringly bad about it, it feels a tad dated. The elongated chin below the bottom bezel, which hosts a power LED and IR receiver, adds a bit of character to the design. The TV can be wall-mounted or placed on a desk using the bundled stands. The desktop stands hold the TV firmly in place. The wall mount kit isn’t bundled but would be provided during installation if required.

The necessary screws are bundled along with a wireless remote control and a pair of AAA batteries. Though the aesthetics of this TV didn’t wow me, there were a couple of design elements that I liked here. Firstly, the stands are attached towards the centre of the TV rather than near the edges, making it possible to place this TV on a smaller desk. Secondly, the side ports are located near the left edge of the TV making them easy to access even after wall-mounting it. On the flip side, certain ports placed at the back of the TV will be hard to reach.

Speaking of ports, you get three HDMI ports - one of which supports ARC, two USB 2.0 ports, optical audio out, 3.5 mm headphone jack, coaxial A/V inputs and a LAN port. Wireless connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.0 to connect wireless speakers/headphones and even a keyboard or mouse. You also get dual band WiFi with support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and a/b/g/n/AC standards. Thus most of the key connectivity bases are covered on this Sony TV.

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV Review Back ports

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV - Features and specifications: 7.5/10
This TV has a 32-inch panel with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and a 50 Hz refresh rate. I was hoping Sony would go Full HD here but that’s not the case. Neither the panel type nor peak brightness figures have been mentioned here. It does support a couple of basic HDR formats like HDR10 and HLG. This TV is powered by a quad-core chip with four ARM Cortex A55 cores that can clock up to 1400 MHz and a Mali-G31 GPU. You get 1.5 GB RAM and 16 GB of internal storage, more than half of which is available for your needs.

Sound output is rated at 20 Watts RMS with support for Dolby audio. Given that it is based on Google TV platform, it has Chromecast built-in and you can cast content on it from compatible apps on your Android phone or tablet. Something unique here is that this Sony TV works with Alexa-enabled smart devices too, and they can be controlled from here along with those in the Google ecosystem. It is also compliant with Apple AirPlay and HomeKit.

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV Review Remote

You get a wireless remote control that operates over IR and Bluetooth both. Though it doesn’t miss out on any important keys, it has far too many buttons and feels cluttered. The remote has hotkeys for Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube and YouTube Music. The remote is voice enabled, so you can bring up the Google Assistant by pressing the corresponding key and issue voice commands.

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV - User interface: 8/10
The Sony KD-32W830K runs the latest Google TV based on Android 11 for TV. Most of the features are similar to Android TV but with a slightly different user interface. In fact, it seems Google is moving towards having a uniform UI for both as newer Android TV updates on several TVs make the interface look a lot like that of Google TV. The UI is quite polished and assigns a higher priority to content discovery instead of installed apps.

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV Review Google TV UI

It shows you suggested content from various OTT platforms which the AI believes would interest you. Don’t worry if it feels random at the beginning; it is expected to get smarter as you watch more content on it. There’s Google Play Store that gives you access to a lot more apps. Apps for quite a few popular OTT services come preinstalled on this TV. Their subscriptions need to be purchased separately though and you have to login to each service that you wish to watch here.

There is a dedicated settings button on the remote that gives you quick access to picture, sound and other settings on the fly irrespective of the app or input in use. The UI is fairly simple to use and the learning curve isn’t steep.

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV - Picture quality: 8/10
The picture quality of the 32W830K is pretty good despite being just a HD-ready TV. The panel is bright and the colour reproduction is quite impressive as you would expect from a Sony TV. The picture is tuned well out of the box, and you have further scope for adjustment if you wish to. If I have to point out certain minor issues, the reds seem slightly boosted and the default contrast is a tad aggressive. Both can be addressed from the settings by lowering or switching off all the automatic contrast settings and lowering the saturation just a little bit.

Post that, the contrast is generally quite good with impressive black levels for the segment. Details in darker areas in certain scenes in our test videos were visible for most parts. The only real issue here is the moderate sharpness due to the low resolution. Mind you, the picture doesn’t look washed out or dull, but at times you wish for it to be a tad sharper. HDR performance is acceptable, but on a 32-inch HD-ready screen I wouldn’t assign too many points for it, nor should you expect something spectacular.

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV Review Centred stands

720p and 1080p content (scaled down) looks vibrant on this TV with lively colours. A special mention for the skin tones that look quite natural on this screen, something that budget TVs can’t get right most of the time. Lower resolution videos up to 480p are perfectly watchable too given that this is a smallish screen. The viewing angles are generally good with the colour shift being noticeably only from sharp angles. All said and done, the picture quality of the Sony KD-32W830K is impressive for a 32-inch TV.

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV - Audio quality: 7/10
This Sony TV delivers a warm and punchy sound output. You get a pair of bottom firing speakers rated at 20 Watts RMS that delivers Dolby-certified audio. The audio output of this TV is loud and clear for compact to a mid-sized room. There is ample clarity in the vocals and a bit of bass to go with it. The speakers are tuned well out of the box and I did not feel the need to tinker with the audio settings.

The speakers are good enough for general audio needs like watching the news, sports, the odd webseries or listening to music. If you crave for extra thump in the audio, you have more than a handful of audio outputs on this TV like HDMI ARC, optical audio out, headphone jack and Bluetooth to plug in a soundbar or a speaker system.

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV - Overall performance: 7.5/10
The TV takes about 45 seconds to boot up when you switch it on from the mains, which is a little slow for an Android/Google TV. Post that, if you switch it off and on from the remote, the TV comes back on in just a couple of seconds from standby mode, which is good. But there’s something interesting that I noticed here. When you turn on the power from the mains, the TV starts to boot up but the screen stays off. So if you turn the TV on from the remote a minute later, you may feel that it starts almost instantly.

There is no noticeable lag in operation, be it the menus or when watching content. There was a slight delay in the voice assistant’s response initially, but it seemed to get better over the course of testing. The default media player on this TV isn’t the best I have come across for watching videos. Some of our test videos being played from a USB drive had the wrong aspect ratio and I couldn’t find any option to fix that. Using a different player like VLC or MX provided a far better experience. However, this TV cannot play 4K videos through USB. Given that this is not even a Full HD screen, such a requirement would be rare, but it would have been nice if it did.

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV - Price and verdict
This is where things get a little tricky. The Sony KD-32W830K smart TV can be purchased for Rs 28,990 with a one year warranty. That is almost twice the price of certain budget 32-inch Android TVs with similar features but inferior picture quality. Similar sized smart TVs from LG and Samsung also sell for a good Rs 10,000 lower. One can even get certain 43-inch Ultra HD (4K) Android TVs for the price of this Sony TV. So why should one buy this?

Sony KD-32W830K Smart TV Review Side ports

Frankly, there is no clear answer. The only scenarios I can think of for buying this TV are either you are a loyal Sony fan or have a space crunch and want to buy a premium 32-inch TV with superior picture quality and good connectivity options. While there is nothing glaringly wrong about this Sony TV, I feel 29K is too big a price to pay for a 32-inch HD-ready TV irrespective of the brand. Had it been a Full HD TV, I would have given it a bit more leeway.

If you have that kind of budget and space is not an issue, you would be better off buying a 43-inch 4K Android TV from a brand like Hisense. You can even squeeze in a 43-inch Full HD smart TV from the likes of Samsung or LG close to 30K. As for 32-inch HD-ready TVs, there is only as much quality they can offer due to the lower resolution, and it would be prudent to not spend beyond Rs 18,000 to 20,000 on one in this day and age.

Homegrown tech brand Noise launches its first smart eyewear, prices it at Rs 5,999.

India’s homegrown electronics and accessories maker, Noise, has launched its first pair of smart eyewear, the Noise i1. The product has been priced at ₹5,999 and is identical to what audio brand Bose had introduced in December 2018 with Bose Frames.

Homegrown tech brand Noise launches its first smart eyewear, prices it at Rs 5,999.

The Noise i1 will allow users to stream music wirelessly and also attend phone calls. Noise i1 uses Bluetooth 5.1 to pair with smartphones and stream music through them.

It also has touch controls integrated into one of the stalks, which can be used to play or pause music, accept or reject phone calls, and also activate the voice assistant on a user’s phone. The device is compatible with both Android and iOS smartphones.

Noise said during the launch that the frames will also offer swappable lenses, which could allow users to put prescription eye lenses instead of the default sunglass configuration that the Noise i1 comes in.

As per Noise, the device can stream music for nine hours on a single charge. 15 minutes of charging gives it two hours of playback time.

This is the first product launch for Noise under its newly established innovation division, Noise Labs, which was inaugurated on May 11 this year. The latter is slated to help the company enter new product categories, of which smart frames are one.

Amit Khatri, the co-founder of Noise’s holding company Nexxbase Marketing, said that the company’s expansion plans include expanding its local manufacturing efforts, entering new markets, and having “three or four lineups of strong products by the end of this year."

Smart eyewear has been around for a number of years. In 2018, US-based audio equipment manufacturer Bose introduced Bose Frames, which offer similar functionality to the Noise i1.

Since then, multiple companies have expanded to offer these products. For instance, social media firm Snap introduced its augmented reality glasses, Spectacles, which are available in India at ₹29,999.

Eyewear brand Ray-Ban also has its own smart glasses, called Stories, and both Ray-Ban and Snap offer camera-equipped eyewear that can be connected to social media channels to post images that you see directly through the glasses.

However, none of them give a true augmented reality experience. Social media platforms and technology companies like Meta and Apple are also working on AR glasses, but have not marketed the same to consumers yet since they reportedly cost millions of dollars to build.

Explained: What actually happened with the Internet blackout last night and what is Cloudflare

Last night, nearly half of all websites on the internet were inaccessible and were showing error 500. Error 500 mainly occurs when there is an issue with the CDN or content distribution networks.

Explained_ What actually happened with the Internet blackout last night and what is Cloudflare

As a result, some popular services and websites like Discord, League of Legends, a number of popular news websites and some of Google’s services were interrupted.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Large chunks of the internet are returning an nginx 500 Internal Server Error right now (I&#39;m assuming something&#39;s messed up at Cloudflare or similar) but this is definitely my favourite <a href="https://t.co/cK5x49ZLiR">pic.twitter.com/cK5x49ZLiR</a></p>&mdash; Neil Studd (@neilstudd) <a href="https://twitter.com/neilstudd/status/1539135961086435332?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 21, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Yesterday’s internet blackout was mainly caused due to an outage of Cloudfare’s servers. The online security company was quick to identify the problem and rectify the issue, getting these services back up and running, but it was a chaotic few minutes there.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">More Sites Reporting<br>❌ Coinbase<br>❌ Google Services<br>❌ NordVPN<br>❌ ARK Survival Evolved<br>❌ Grindr<br>❌ Omegle</p>&mdash; GhostfromTexas (@GhostfromTexas) <a href="https://twitter.com/GhostfromTexas/status/1539140229914845184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 21, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

According to Cloudflare's incident report, the issue was reported at approximately 6:34 a.m. UTC, the problem was identified just over 20 minutes later around 6:57 a.m., and the fix was implemented at around 7:20 a.m.

Some major services that were interrupted included Amazon Web Services and Google Services. Anyone familiar with the inner workings of today’s internet will realise that nearly 60 to 70 per cent of the entire internet is hosted on Amazon’s servers and that AWS handles over 75 per cent of the Internet’s existing traffic on any single day.

Any disruptions that effects AWS and its subsidiaries will disrupt a major chunk of the internet.

The crypto ecosystem in particular was hit badly. Nearly all of the major crypto wallets and exchanges use services from Cloudflare.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Gotta love seeing 95% of the crypto ecosystem down because of a Cloudflare outage <br><br>Very decentralized! Great work guys!</p>&mdash; Altcoin Psycho (@AltcoinPsycho) <a href="https://twitter.com/AltcoinPsycho/status/1539142458101096448?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 21, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Platforms like Coinbase uses the network, proxy & security provided by Cloudflare. As a result, the crypto market crashed even further, with several users unable to carry out transactions.

Anonymous sources inside Cloudflare believe that the reason why their servers went down was that they were trying to install an update patch to their server management systems, which did not go according to plan and caused an error.

Although Cloudflare was quick to realise this and promptly took action to rectify the problem, it just goes on to show, how badly the modern internet infrastructure has been set up that one company’s server going down somehow results in basically 1/3 of the internet going down.

iQOO 10 Pro rumoured to come with a 200W fast charging system, to be the fastest charging phone ever

iQOO is constantly pushing the envelope with its smartphone charging systems. The Vivo subsidiary is rumoured to be working on a next-gen phone that is capable of fully charging a completely drained out battery from 0-100 per cent, in just 12 minutes. According to a leak iQOO's upcoming flagship smartphone, iQOO 10 Pro is allegedly debuting with an excellent charging capability.

iQOO 10 Pro rumoured to come with a 200W fast charging system, to be the fastest charging phone ever

The iQOO 10 Pro will allegedly sport a 200W fast charging system. If this claim is true, it would mean that iQOO would have the fastest charging smartphone in the world in their lineup.

It is extremely hard to imagine that a modern smartphone battery, which is typically over 4500mAh can be charged up to 100 per cent in just a few minutes. The charging technology is limitless at the moment, yet there's no known model to have a 200W fast charging feature.

The newly developed fast charging technology only takes five minutes to charge a smartphone battery from 50per cent to the full 100 per cent. The rumour also suggests that the product will also arrive with a fast-charging adaptor that would allow that sort of bandwidth.

With that being said, the Chinese phone brand will bring 50V and 5A solutions to iQOO 10 Pro's charging adapter. This feature will help in increasing the charging efficiency of the handheld. Theoretically, it should also solve any potential overheating issues during the charging process.

Moreover, the company might only use a charger based on gallium nitride to maintain its small adapter size.

iQOO 10 Pro Specifications
