iPhone 14 Pro & 14 Pro Max rumoured to have better OLED Panels compared to regular iPhone 14

As Apple is gearing up for the launch of the iPhone 14 series in September at their fall event, rumours surrounding the device keep on coming. If we take every rumour into consideration, it seems that the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will be the actual flagship devices from Apple this year, whereas the regular, vanilla models of the iPhone 14, won’t be that exciting.

iPhone 14 Pro & 14 Pro Max rumoured to have better OLED Panels compared to regular iPhone 14

The latest rumour to support such a hypothesis would be that Samsung Display, the company that manufactures most of Apple’s display panels across their product lineup, has supplied two different kinds of OLED panels for this year's iPhones.

The iPhone 14 will have a 6.1-inch display whereas the iPhone 14 Max will have a 6.7-inch display. The iPhone 14 Pro, will have a 6.1-inch display with ProMotion capabilities, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max will have a 6.7-inch display with ProMotion capabilities.

Apparently, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will receive a new OLED panel utilising a more advanced set of materials, known as ‘M12’. This will be the same cutting-edge OLED material set that will be used in the forthcoming Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 foldables. The iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max will also use an LTPO backplane to enable the ProMotion feature.

However, it’s only the Pro line that will see such an improvement. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 max will not be getting this upgrade. Instead, they will have to make do with the same display panel with LTPS backplanes used in the iPhone 13 family. The iPhone 13 family, had used a set of materials that were known as ‘M11.’

Samsung Mobiles already separates its phones in this way. The Samsung Galaxy S22 uses an OLED display made using M10 materials, while the Galaxy S22 Plus and S22 Ultra use display panels which have been made using M11 materials.

Besides the different display technologies being used in the display panels, rumours have suggested that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will effectively run on the same A15 Bionic chip that powers the iPhone 13, while the iPhone 14 Pro lineup will switch to the newer and much faster A16.

Other reports claim that only the Pro models will sport a revised hole punch notch, with the iPhone 14 and 14 Max making do with the existing chunky version. It’s also claimed that only the Pro handsets will gain a new 48MP camera sensor.

OnePlus 10T Chinese launch cancelled, global launch to go ahead as planned, here’s where to watch live stream

OnePlus had planned to launch its flagship device of the year, the OnePlus 10T 5G globally on 3 August. There were supposed to be two launch events, one in China and the other in New York.

OnePlus 10T Chinese launch cancelled, global launch to go ahead as planned, here’s where to watch live stream

However, following the ever-growing tension between China and Taiwan after Speaker of US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, OnePlus has announced that they will be cancelling the Chinese launch event of the OnePlus 10T.

Apart from OnePlus, Motorola was also supposed to launch its next generation of the Moto Razr folding smartphone in China on August 2. Both companies have had to cancel their launch events.

While the Moto Razr 2022 was supposed to be a China-specific launch, OnePlus’ launch event was a global one. That is why, OnePlus will be continuing with the launch event in New York, and will be live streaming the event on their social media handles, and their YouTube channel.

The Geopolitical tensions in China are said to be the reason behind OnePlus and Motorola axing their launch events. The tensions in China are high due to a visit from US Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who visited Taiwan on August 2.

Pelosi, who has been a vocal critic of China visited Taiwan on August 2, and China is apparently unhappy with Pelosi’s visit. A report in The Indian Express also says that China has issued notices to US President Joe Biden to “not play with fire.”

The developments in China are not said to affect the global launches of the abovementioned smartphones. While the new Moto Razr was only going to launch in China, the OnePlus Ace Pro or the OnePlus 10T 5G will launch in other regions including India today. The smartphone is scheduled to launch at 7:30 PM IST today during an offline event that is taking place in New York.

For those interested in watching the live stream of the launch event, they can do so through OnePlus’ social media handles on Twitter and Instagram, through their website, or their YouTube c.hannel.

Specifications-wise, the OnePlus 10T is expected to get a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. It will be powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, which has been paired with up to 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and up to 256 of UFS 3.1 storage.

As for the cameras, the OnePlus 10T has a triple camera setup at the rear, which is expected to include a 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor and an f/1.8 aperture lens for the main shooter. It is also expected to have an 8MP ultra-wide camera, which might be accompanied by a 2MP macro sensor. On the front, there could either be a 16MP or a 32MP camera for selfies.

As for the battery, the OnePlus 10T is set to get a 4,800mAh battery that supports 150W charging. OnePlus will also be shipping a 160W charger with the device. It is also likely to feature NFC and stereo speakers as well. Whether it will support reverse charging or wireless charging, remains to be seen.

The OnePlus 10T is expected to have a base price of Rs 49,999 for the 8GB + 128GB variant in India, and it will be sold through Amazon and OnePlus’ website. The smartphone will be offered in Jade Green and Moonstone Black colours.

Motorola Razr 2022, Moto X30 Pro launch postponed indefinitely, Nancy Pelosi’s Taiwan visit may be the reason

Motorola’s Razr 2022 and X30 Pro launch was one of the most anticipated launch events of 2022. Lenovo-backed Motorola had also hyped up the event a lot across Chinese social media and press. However, the tech company cancelled the launch event at the very last minute and indefinitely postponed the launch of the devices.

Motorola Razr 2022 & X30 Pro launch postponed indefinitely, Nancy Pelosi’s Taiwan visit may be the reason

Motorola and Lenovo mobile general manager Chen Jin made the announcement on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo, saying “I'm sorry to inform you that the Moto new product launch scheduled for 7:30 PM (China Standard Time) tonight has been cancelled for some reason.” He also added, “We still sincerely hope to bring new Moto products to everyone, and still be the Moto that Chinese users like.”

Motorola had announced the August 2 launch event for the Moto Razr 2022 and the Moto X30 Pro back in July this year. The tentative date for the launch of the Motorola Razr 2022 was important for Motorola.

Samsung is going to launch the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Z Fold 4 at their Galaxy Unpacked event on 10 August. Motorola had planned to undercut the Galaxy Foldable devices, by pricing its devices lower than Samsung, and more importantly, by launching its devices a week before Samsung.

Samsung has dominated the foldable phones market, as its efforts have generally delivered well-designed products with top specs. The Galaxy Z Flip 3, in particular, has benefitted from a price drop that's made it the first foldable device available for less than $1,000. Motorola on the other hand had earlier relied on nostalgia over the older Moto Razr series. However, nostalgia wasn’t enough for people to overlook its high price and average specifications.

Although Motorola hasn’t revealed why their event was cancelled, but industry experts and Chinese journalists believe that Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, visiting Taiwan and the subsequent rise in tensions between Taiwan and China may be a major reason.

Motorola Razr 2022 & X30 Pro launch postponed indefinitely, Nancy Pelosi’s Taiwan visit may be the reason 2

Taiwan continues to be a major industrial and manufacturing hub for a number of tech companies. Increased tensions between China and Taiwan will surely impact the movement of components between the two countries.

Motorola surely has a good number of devices with themselves that they could have carried on with the launch and sold the devices for a couple of days, before needing to rely on freshly manufactured devices. That is just the standard practice that all major tech companies follow.

Because of this, it won’t be wrong to believe that the launch event was cancelled due to political reasons, perhaps under the influence of the Chinese communist state. If that is indeed the case, this does not bode well for a number of tech companies.

For example, OnePlus is set to launch two new devices globally on 3 August. The main launch event will take place in China, and in New York. There is a very good possibility that the launch event may get cancelled.

Motorola, meanwhile is yet to release a statement on when will they launch the Moto Razr 2022, and the Moto X30 Pro.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 & Flip 4 Available For Pre-Orders, Here’s How To Pre-Book & For How Much

Samsung will be launching their flagship foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Flip 4 on August 10 at their Galaxy Unpacked event. While the event will be a digital one, interested viewers can catch the launch being live streamed on Samsung’s website and their YouTube channel on August 10, at 6:30 PM.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 & Flip 4 Available For Pre-Orders, Here’s How To Pre-Book & For How Much

Samsung India has already started taking pre-orders of the upcoming devices. The Indian arm of the South Korean tech giant has announced that customers can pre-reserve the Next Galaxy Fold and Flip smartphones for a small token amount and get some additional benefits at the time of the launch.

Users who are keen on being one of the first people to get their hands on the Galaxy Fold 4 and the Galaxy Flip 4 will be able to pre-reserve or pre-order their foldable devices by paying a token amount of Rs 1,999 on Samsung’s website and through Samsung Exclusive Stores.

Customers who pre-reserve the next-gen Galaxy smartphones will get additional benefits worth Rs 5000 after delivery of the devices.

Although the exact features and specs of Samsung's upcoming foldable smartphones will only be revealed during the launch event on August 10, some of the features and specifications have leaked online.

While Samsung has not confirmed anything about the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4, the smartphones are said to come with several improvements over their predecessors.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is said to come with a new design which is said to be thinner than the predecessor along with an improved camera system. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, on the other hand, will come with an improved battery, and a similar design to the predecessor.

The Galaxy Flip 4 is expected to be running on the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset and will have more storage options as opposed to the Flip 3. The Flip 4 is also rumoured to have a less noticeable crease on the display.

The biggest upgrade to the Galaxy Flip 4, will probably be to the battery, which is expected to jump from 3,300 mAh all the way up to 3,700 mAh.

The Galaxy Fold 4, too, is expected to have Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. It is likely to be powered by a 4,400 mAh battery with support for fast charging. Additionally, we should also see a good array of 5G bands, stereo speakers and support for an S Pen.

Moto X30 Pro & Razr 2022 set to launch today, check out the specifications and possible Indian pricing

Lenovo-backed Motorola will be launching the Motorola X30 Pro and probably the Razr 2022 in China today. Out of these two, the final design of the Motorola X30 Pro has already leaked online.

Moto X30 Pro & Razr 2022 set to launch today, check out the specifications and possible Indian pricing2

Motorola has a lot riding on these devices, especially the X30 Pro. The Motorola X30 Pro is being poised as the first smartphone to have a 200MP camera. The device will also give users the opportunity to test out Samsung’s ISOCELL HP1 sensors, and see for themselves how will the ISOCELL HP sensors play out in the real world.

The Razr 2022, on the other hand, has the pressure to establish Motorola as a serious player in the foldable devices market. Although the previous Razr devices were very well received, they had their issues, because of which they didn’t sell as much as Motorola has hoped.

The launch event is taking place in China at 7:30 PM CST or 5:30 PM in India. However, watching the event may prove to be a challenge. Motorola will be live streaming the launch over Weibo only, as it is the social media platform of choice for the Chinese Government. Also, the Weibo app is banned in India.

We take a look at both, the Moto X30 Pro, and the Moto Razr 2022, what their specifications are going to be like and their expected price in India.

Moto Razr 2022 Specifications and Pricing
The 2022 version of the Moto Razr might be a major reinvention of Motorola’s foldable phones. It certainly is a major departure from their regular design of foldable phones. Designwise, the biggest change that we will be seeing this year is much thinner bezels and the lack of a chin.

Motorola has confirmed that the Razr 2022 will have 2 displays. The main display will be a 6.67-inch 1080X2400 OLED panel, which, in all likelihood will support a refresh rate of 120Hz, whereas the secondary outer display will be a 2.65-inch 573 x 800 OLED panel.

Moto X30 Pro & Razr 2022 set to launch today, check out the specifications and possible Indian pricing

It will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset and will feature up to 18GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

As for the cameras, it will get a dual camera set up at the rear, with the primary camera being a 50MP sensor, a 13MP ultrawide, and a 32MP front-facing camera.

As for the battery, the Moto Razr 2022 is likely to get a 3,500mAh battery with fast charging.

Leaks have suggested that the Moto Razr 2022 will be priced cheaper than the Razr 2020. In all likelihood, the base variant of the Razr 2022, the 8GB + 128GB variant will cost about EUR 1,149 or roughly Rs 92,000.

Moto X30 Pro Specifications and Pricing
The Moto X30 Pro may be launched in the international market under a different name. It will either be called the Motorola frontier, or the Moto Edge 30 Ultra. In either case, the device will be packing some serious punch, and have some pretty impressive specifications.

The X30 Pro will have a 6.67-inch 144 Hz P-OLED curved display panel. Under the hood, the device will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, and will feature up to 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

For the cameras, it will have the 200MP Samsung ISOCELL HP 1 sensor as the main camera, a 50 MP ultrawide camera and a 12MP 2x telephoto camera as well. For the front-facing camera, it will be getting a 60MP sensor.

It will have a 4,500 mAh battery with support for 125W wired charging over USB-C and 50W wireless charging.

As for the pricing, the X30 Pro will start at EUR 999 for the base 8GB +128GB variant, which roughly converts to Rs 80,360.

5G Auction in India: From Reliance Jio to Bharti Airtel, who bought what and for how much

The mega auction of India’s 5G spectrum ended on Monday after 7 days of bidding. In these 7 days, the total bids that were received, were worth well over Rs 1.5 lakh crore, making it one of the biggest spectrum auctions in India.

5G Auction in India From Reliance Jio to Bharti Airtel, who bought what and for how much

The Government of India had offered 10 bands of India’s 5G spectrum. However, not all bands or airwaves were bid on. For example, no bids were received for the 600Mhz and 2300Mhz bands.

The auction was held for spectrum in various low-frequency bands which included  600MHz, 700MHz, 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300Mhz, one mid-frequency band of 3300MHz and one high-frequency band of 26GHz.

Most of the bids were for the 3300MHz and the 26GHz frequency bands. These bands received over two-thirds of the bids. The next band with the highest number of bids was the 700MHz frequency, which received over a quarter of all bids. Of the 72.098GHz spectrum that was offered, about 51.236GHz or 71 per cent was sold.

In a statement addressed to the press after the conclusion of the auction, Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated “We understand that the spectrum purchased is good enough to cover all the circles in the country. In 2-3 years, we will have very good coverage for 5G across the country.” The minister also said that 5G services could be launched as soon as October this year.

Reliance Jio was the top bidder
In the auction, Reliance Jio emerged as the top bidder, picking up airwaves across the 700MHz, 800MHz, 1800MHz, 3300MHZ, and 26GHz bands. Reliance Jio put up over Rs 88,078 crore for these bands. In total, Reliance Jio bought about 24.740GHz worth of airwaves.

Reliance Jio was followed by Bharti Airtel, which bought about 19.867GHz worth of airwaves, across the 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 3300MHz, and 26GHz bands, shelling out about Rs 43,084 crore.

Next up, was Vodafone Idea, who bid Rs 18,799 for about 6.228GHz of frequencies, across 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2500MHz, 3300MHz and 26GHz bands.

The Adani Group also bid on the 26GHz for setting up a private telecom network that they would be using within their own organisation.

What’s next for the bidders?
All four bidders have the option to make the payments in instalments over a period of 20 years. The duration of these entities' right to use these spectrums is also 20 years.

Samsung is testing a game-changing new smartphone feature that hides your data from repair shops

One of the major areas from where private photos, messages and videos of a mobile user get leaked, are from repair shops. While the chances of this happening at an authorised service centre are very minimal, there have been enough bad apples to make people wary of handing their devices over. The way we deal with data security and privacy, has become a joke.

Samsung testing a game-changing new smartphone feature that hides your data from repair shops

Samsung seems to understand this and has therefore come up with a new feature that lets users keep all their private information like messages, email, photos and videos safe. Samsung is experimenting with a new feature in South Korea called "repair mode."

As the name suggests, it's a special setting that you can toggle on when you take your phone in for repairs that protects your data from repair technicians and other people at service centres and repair shops.

In this new Repaid Mode, the phone becomes a blank new phone: your photos, messages, and accounts all disappear and only the default apps are accessible and shown. It lets technicians carry out all the necessary repairs and use all the normal phone functions, like taking a photo to see if the camera has been repaired successfully.

The original data is contained in an isolated environment. The new mode works by creating a new, temporary user account within a different drive partition which then gets deleted once the device has been repaired and delivered.

Samsung says Repair Mode will be enabled in certain devices through an upcoming update for the South Korean version of the S21 series, with more devices to follow. Slowly, they will be implementing the feature in other countries as well.

When the update arrives, users will be able to find it in Settings, under the Battery and Device Care menu. This will restart the phone and take you to the blank account, which doesn't require a password. To disable it, you simply restart your phone again, unlock it the usual way, and it'll be back to normal.

On paper, this may seem to be a very tiny detail and an ancillary feature at best. However, practically speaking this is a feature that most other smartphone manufacturers should start providing. In fact, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see it become a standard feature in Android and iOS in a few years.

Explained: Mirrorless v/s DSLRs cameras and why are manufacturers like Nikon & Canon ditching DSLRs for Mirrorless

Back in 2004, when the world first saw a mirrorless camera, industry experts and professional photographers wrote it off completely, assuming that this was another gimmicky feature that would never catch on. BTW, the first truly mirrorless camera was made by Epson, a technology company that isn’t exactly known for its cameras.

People started taking mirrorless cameras seriously from around 2008-2010 when a number of camera makers, like Sony Leica, Olympus, Fujifilm, Pentax, and Panasonic started dabbling with the form factor.

Explained_ Mirrorless v_s DSLRs cameras and why are manufacturers like Nikon & Canon ditching DSLRs for Mirrorless 2

By 2008, mirrorless cameras were considered as a lifestyle product given their beautiful design and look. The picture quality they boasted was way better than any point-and-shoot camera could offer but not as good as DSLRs, even your basic, APS-C sensor DSLRs.

Today, however, DSLRs, once the mainstay in photography as well as filmmaking, is going the way of the dinosaur. You know things are bad for the camera format when major manufacturers like Nikon and Canon are considering switching their production capacities completely to mirrorless cameras.

Mirrorless v/s DSLRs: What are the differences?

DSLRs or Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras have a pentaprism glass mechanism, which projects the image on a viewfinder. The reason why we needed this mechanism is to see what kind of framing would one get when one would be taking photos.

Light enters through the lens, which is reflected off a mirror in the camera body that bounces light into the viewfinder. When you click the shutter, the mirror flips down and exposes the digital sensor, which absorbs the light and captures the image.

In a mirrorless camera, this glass pentaprism is absent. Instead, we use a digital viewfinder, which is basically a video feed of what the lens is seeing, which is shown to users usually at 60fps.

Explained_ Mirrorless v_s DSLRs cameras and why are manufacturers like Nikon & Canon ditching DSLRs for Mirrorless3

Because the design is more simple and more streamlined in Mirrorless cameras, they are considerably smaller and more portable. The smaller size of mirrorless cameras has also allowed manufacturers like Nikon to create much wider lens mounts, which allow them to go for apertures like f1.2 or f0.95.

Mirrorless v/s DSLRs: What makes Mirrorless cameras better?

Mirrorless cameras are proving to be better than DSLRs or mirrored cameras in a number of ways. Firstly, the more compact and lightweight bodies of mirrorless cameras mean they are very easy to carry and work with. Secondly, the autofocus systems on mirrorless cameras are far superior to DSLRs, especially when we consider autofocus tracking in videos.

Also, mirrorless cameras include Hybrid Auto Focus systems that combine the advantages of fast, decisive on-sensor phase-detection AF (PDAF) and the precision of contrast-detect AF (CAF), which allows users to select very precise focusing points. This is also why mirrorless cameras are able to focus quickly on very fast-moving subjects and track focus better than most DSLRs.

Another advantage that mirrorless cameras have over DSLRs is the digital viewfinders that they use. When using viewfinders in DLSRs, you don’t actually get to see how your image or video is going to get exposed, whether you should tweak your ISO, exposure compensation, or aperture opening.

Explained_ Mirrorless v_s DSLRs cameras and why are manufacturers like Nikon & Canon ditching DSLRs for Mirrorless4

When using the viewfinder in mirrorless cameras, you get to see how your image will be exposed in real-time and can make adjustments accordingly. For professional photographers, this actually helps them save a lot of time in post-production.

Mirrorless v/s DSLRs: What makes DSLR cameras better?

DSLRs with good glass pentaprism optical viewfinders, provide a brilliant real feel viewing image that no mirrorless Electronic View Finders can quite match. EVFs can be jarring, especially for people who have shot on DSLRs all their lives.

Because DSLRs are bigger in size, they are very ergonomic to use and can be operated even when you’re thick, heavy gloves. Also, their bigger size allows manufacturers to use bigger batteries, which last much longer than most mirrorless cameras.

Furthermore, as far as built quality goes, it is really difficult to beat a DSLR, especially the ones that have a magnesium alloy body. Some photographers and filmmakers feel that a heavier camera, like a full-frame DSLR, also provides a more stable shooting platform than some of the smaller, lighter mirrorless cameras.

And finally, there is the range of lenses available for DSLRs. Because mirrorless cameras are fairly new, the range of lenses on any platform, be it Sony, Nikon or Canon is very limited. DSLRs on the other hand, have a wide variety of lenses to choose from. For an amateur photographer or a hobbyist, this may not be a concern, but for a professional filmmaker or photographer who invests almost thrice of what their camera body costs on their lenses, this is a big deal.

Yes, there are adapters that let you use your older lenses meant for DSLRs with new mirrorless camera bodies, but they invariably downgrade the quality of your image, ever so slightly. Furthermore, you lose out on a lot of features and qualities of the lens when you’re using an adapter.

Mirrorless v/s DSLRs: Conclusion - Why are camera manufacturers like Nikon and Canon moving away from DSLRs?

Believe it or not, most of this is because of social media, YouTube and what most content creators want. Most camera buyers right now are either amateur filmmakers and content creators who want lightweight, easy-to-use cameras.

For someone who needs to upload videos or photos almost every day, they need the convenience of a point shoot and the quality that a flagship DSLR provides. Mirrorless cameras have been able to provide just that and hence have been chosen as the way to go forward.

Consider this as an example. When film SLRs and DSLRs were at their peak, Nikon and Canon together had over 80 per cent of the camera market share, even among professionals. Sure there were the likes of Leicas, Olympus and Pentax, but they were very minor players, at least in terms of numbers.

Then came Sony with their first mirrorless cameras first in the APS-C format and then as full-frames, and went to turn the market on its head. Independent filmmakers raved about how easy to use these cameras were, and how they were offering much better quality, ease of use, and feature sets, compared to the best DSLRs that either Canon or Nikon had to offer.

That is why, from 2014 onwards, Sony cameras outsold Nikon and Canon combined. The two major players had to respond, and therefore, in 2018, both these players started selling mirrorless cameras.

In the 4 years since they launched their mirrorless cameras, Canon and Nikon have been able to claw back some of the market shares they lost. As of today, the three major players in the mirrorless market, Sony, Canon and Nikon, have roughly the same numbers in terms of units of cameras sold. Sony may have a slight advantage over Nikon and Canon at times, but the disparity is nowhere near what it was during the mid-2010s.
