Xiaomi 12S Series launched with insane specs and camera, however, Indian users won’t get to try it

Xiaomi showcased and launched their latest flagship series, the Xiaomi 12S in China yesterday. The main flagship device is the Xiaomi 12S Ultra which comes with some seriously impressive specifications, especially in the camera department. The phone gets a massive camera module with Xiaomi using a new Sony IMX989 sensor, which is one inch in size and was co-developed with Leica, the German camera-maker.

However, it seems that the highly anticipated series will be limited to the Chinese market for the time being. Tech enthusiasts can try to get their hands on the device by importing it from one of the vendors but that is very risky as an endeavour and something that we cannot recommend.

This is a little surprising, given that Xiaomi streamed the event on its global YouTube channel. There is a chance that the Xiaomi 12S Ultra could come to other markets, but with a different name or number line.

For those interested the Xiaomi 12S, the most basic phone in the series, has a 6.28-inch FHD+ AMOLED HDR10+ display with support for a refresh rate of 120Hz, and Dolby Vision. The handset is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 chipset paired with Adreno GPU, and comes in four models: 8GB + 128GB, 8GB + 256GB, 12GB + 256GB and 12GB + 512GB version.

It gets a 4,500mAh battery with support for 67W fast charging, 50W wireless charging and 10W reverse wireless charging.

As for the camera, the Xiaomi 12S will have a 50MP Sony IMX707 primary sensor with an f1.9 lens with OIS, a 13MP sensor and an ultra-wide-angle lens and a 5MP macro/tele camera. There is a 32MP selfie snapper on the front, behind the punch-hole cutout.

The Xiaomi 12S Pro has a 6.73-inch 2K LTPO 2.0 AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. It is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 chipset coupled with Adreno GPU, and comes with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage that may not be further expandable. You also get Harman Kardon speakers supporting Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio.

The Xiaomi 12S Pro gets a 4,600mAh battery with 120W fast charging, 50W wireless charging and 10W reverse wireless charging support.

For the cameras, the Xiaomi 12S Pro gets a triple camera layout on the back, with a 50MP Sony IMX707 primary sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 50MP third camera. There is a 32MP selfie snapper on the front.

Finally, there is the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. It gets a large 6.73-inch AMOLED LTPO 2.0 display with 2K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 chipset paired with Adreno GPU, and has up to 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. You also get Harman Kardon speakers supporting Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio.

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra packs a large 5000mAh battery with 120W fast charging support. The company has launched a new proprietary battery charging chipset with the phone.

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra also has a triple camera array on the back. It is the first phone to use the custom 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor. It has a 48MP primary sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 48MP zoom lens. There is a 32MP shooter on the front for selfies

The devices are expensive as well, given that they are flagships and currently have some of the best hardware you can find in a smartphone.

The Xiaomi 12S is priced at CNY 3,999 or around Rs 47,000 for the 8GB + 128GB, and goes all the way up to CNY 5,199 or around Rs 61,000 for the 12GB + 512GB model.

The Xiaomi 12S Pro is priced at CNY 4,699 or around Rs 55,000 for the 8GB + 128GB, and goes all the way up to CNY 5,899 or around Rs 70,000 for the 12GB + 512GB model.

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is priced at CNY 5,999 or around Rs 71,000 for the 8GB + 2568GB, and goes all the way up to CNY 6,999 or around Rs 70,000 for the 12GB + 512GB model.

Steve Jobs to get the Presidential Medal Of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the US, posthumously

Earlier this week, the office of the President of the United States announced that it would be bestowing Steve Jobs with the Presidential Medal Of Freedom, the highest honour in the country that a civilian is eligible for.

Steve Jobs to get posthumous Presidential Medal Of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the US

The Biden administration announced seventeen recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Friday. Jobs is one of three to receive the award posthumously, the others being John McCain and Richard Trumka.

The Presidential Medal Of Freedom is awarded to those civilians who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavours. It is considered equivalent to the Medal Of Honour, an award that is bestowed on military personnel who go above and beyond the call of duty

The White House's bio of Jobs reads, “His vision, imagination and creativity led to inventions that have, and continue to, change the way the world communicates, as well as transforming the computer, music, film and wireless industries.”

2022 marks the 11th year since Steve Jobs passed away on October 5th at the age of 56, after fighting a long and hard battle with pancreatic cancer. He had resigned from Apple just six weeks before his death.

Although he is considered to be a visionary by many in the tech community, some see Steve Jobs as a divisive figure. He was either seen as a brilliant, genius entrepreneur who left an indelible mark on the tech industry thanks to the products his company designed and developed under him, or he was seen as a tyrannical, manipulative man who was terrible to those around him who abandoned his daughter.

The awards will be presented at the White House on July 7, 2022. The Biden administration has not revealed who will be collecting Jobs' award. However, it is likely to be collected by Steve Job’s wife of 20 years, Laurene Powell-Jobs.

Intel showcases their 12th Gen Core Processors for hardcore gamers, content creators and power users

Intel showcased the 12th Generation or the Alder Lake series of Intel Core Mobile & Desktop Processors, in India at the 12th Generation Intel Core Experience event. The processors are available across a number of platforms, ranging from the S-series or the desktop-only variants all the way to the H-series, HX series, U-series, and P-series for notebooks and other mobile devices.

Intel showcases their 12th Gen Core Processors for hardcore gamers, content creators and power users

The 12th Generation has been built on Intel 7 process and features a new architecture design that allows systems to leverage two types of specialized cores, performance cores and efficiency cores. This allows processors across Intel’s 12th Gen processors to deliver class-leading performance and snappy responsiveness.

We get to see a whole new generation of legacy technologies. We get to see support for DDR5, upto 4800 Mhz RAM. Chipsets for the 12th Gen processors are also backwards compatible with DDR4 RAM. We also get Thunderbolt™ 4 connectivity, and Intel® Wi-Fi 6E (Gig+).

The biggest breakthrough that Intel has made with the 12th Gen processors is the all-new performance hybrid architecture, which, Intel say, is its most significant shift in x86 architecture in more than a decade.

Basically, this is a combination of Performance cores and Efficiency cores to deliver ultimate performance. The Performance-cores or P-Cores are the highest performing CPU core Intel has ever built, for maximum burst and single-threaded performance. The Efficient-cores or E-Cores are designed for scalable performance-per-watt, for multi-threaded and multi-tasking performance. This is possible all thanks to Intel’s new process called the Intel Thread Director.

Intel Thread Director monitors any given set of instructions, analyses it and then helps the OS scheduler in allocating the different instructions to a dynamic set of P-core & E-cores to carry out the instructions in such a way that the machine remains snappy and very responsive. This allows the best possible utilisation of performance and efficiency.

What this translates to in real-life performance is that in case while playing a processor-heavy game, you suddenly need to start streaming on a platform, switching the streaming application would have no discernible impact on your gameplay, even under heavy loads.

Intel also introduced the new cache architecture that has been used for the 12th Gen Intel Core processors. Intel is using the new Common Intel Smart Cache architecture which is shared among the P-Cores, E-Cores, and graphics processors. Furthermore, they have increased the Smart Cache (L3) and L2 cache sizes,  which drives large memory capacity and reduces latency. This in turn delivers faster game loading times and much smoother frame rates during gameplay.

Intel showcases their 12th Gen Core Processors for hardcore gamers, content creators and power users

The 12th Gen HX series is aimed towards mobile devices like laptops and notebooks and features up to 16 cores and supports overclocking.

The H-series have also been aimed at laptops and notebooks and offer up to 14 cores. The H-series processors will be paired with discrete graphics and will be mainly seen in gaming laptops.

The U-series offers up to 10 cores and it is mainly for ultra thin and light laptops. The P-series is for performance thin and light laptops and notebooks in the lower range.

As of now, there are limited laptops and notebooks with Intel’s 12th Generation processors, but soon, we can expect more OEMs to bring 12th Gen Intel chip-powered devices into the Indian market.

iPhone 14: Here are the most recent updates about the launch date of Apple’s upcoming flagships

Apple’s iPhone 14 is one of the most anticipated mobile devices of 2022. Although we have a rough idea that Apple will be announcing the device sometime around the end of September or early October, there has been a lot of speculation about the date of the launch event.

iPhone 14 Here are the most recent updates about the launch date of Apple’s upcoming flagships

We expect four new iPhone 14 models this year, and they will likely be available to pre-order in a matter of just a few months. While the earlier models of the iPhones were usually unveiled during the first half of the year, Apple has since then switched to a consistent schedule of announcing and releasing the new iPhone 14 series in mid-fall, that is around September.

The only two exceptions to this schedule have been the iPhone X, which was released on November 3, 2017, and the iPhone 12, which was released on October 23, 2020.

The iPhone 12 series was delayed by a month due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The iPhone X was announced in September, but not released until November. The iPhone X featured an all-new design and was the first iPhone with FaceID. Hence, the delay with the launch.

If history is any indication, Apple generally holds its annual Special Event to announce new iPhone models on the first or second Tuesday of September. This year, that would be September 6 or September 13. Given that Labor Day is September 5 in the United States, the most likely date for a keynote this year is September 13.

However, we still can’t entirely rule out the possibility of delays. There are a number of issues with the global supply chain, ranging from chip and other shortages to shutdowns in major industrial towns in China, caused by COVID-19.

There have been reports that suggest that Apple is struggling in acquiring components for its iPhone 14 Pro Max, but that’s about it. In all likelihood, the other three devices will be readily available when Apple finally launches the series.

The iPhone 14 lineup is expected to bring upgrades to the camera, a redesign for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, and more. For example, the Pro models are slated to feature a hole punch along with a pill-shaped cutout. The front-facing camera is expected to get updated, a new purple colour could be offered, and there are rumours of an always-on display.

We also have to consider that the iPhone is Apple’s best-selling product, so there is a very good chance that they might just accommodate the production of iPhones over all of their other devices to get ready in time for a September launch. In case Apple misses their September deadline, it will be forced to go on the backfoot against all other major mobile phone brands. This is a position, that Apple does not want to be in.

Xiaomi will be live streaming the launch event across a number of platforms. Firstly one can catch the live stream via the brand’s official channel on Bilibili, a Chinese video-sharing social media site, exclusively in China. For the rest of the world, there will also be a concurrent live stream hosted on Xiaomi’s official channel on YouTube.

Xiaomi will be announcing at least three different phones under the 12S flagship series. These will be named as the Xiaomi 12S, Xiaomi 12S Pro and Xiaomi 12S Ultra.

Samsung’s Note series is officially dead, confirms top exec, will be replaced by Note’s spiritual successor

It seems that Samsung has finally decided to kill off their iconic Note series. Instead, the legacy that Samsung had established with their flagship “phablets” will be carried forwards by the S Ultra series, which has been positioned as Note’s spiritual successor.

Samsung’s Note series is officially dead, confirms top exec, will be replaced by Note’s spiritual successor

In a Twitter post, prominent Samsung leaker Ice Universe translated an interview quote from Samsung head of mobile experience Roh Tae-moon. In the quote, Roh states that “Starting from this year, Galaxy Note will appear in the form of S Ultra every year.”

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">TM Roh:“Starting from this year, Galaxy Note will appear in the form of S Ultra every year.” <a href="https://t.co/TIKX85razb">pic.twitter.com/TIKX85razb</a></p>&mdash; Ice universe (@UniverseIce) <a href="https://twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/1542418543433482241?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 30, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The Samsung Galaxy Note series used to be the productivity flagship in Samsung’s smartphone lineup and was a fan favourite. The premium features, especially the ones that revolved around multitasking and productivity, were loved by many. In fact, many of the current multitasking features that we see in today’s Android were first made mainstream by the Note Series.

The S Pen and the huge phablet-like form factor had their own fan base. But when Samsung decided to skip 2021 for the Note, the writing was on the wall. In February 2022, Samsung officially announced that for the foreseeable future, they wouldn’t be working on a Note device. Instead, the roles and duties that were assigned to the Note series were placed upon the new Galaxy S22 Ultra. Naturally, the next iteration of the Note series would come to us as the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Samsung’s Note series is officially dead, confirms top exec, will be replaced by Note’s spiritual successor

Right now not a lot is known about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 lineup. However, some information has trickled out. Tech enthusiasts are anticipating that the Galaxy S23 will release sometime in early 2023, but that has yet to be confirmed.

A few rumours related to the camera have also leaked out. GalaxyClub, a reputable tipster around all things Samsung, claims that the Samsung Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus will both come with a 12MP front camera, which would be an upgrade over recent models.

The rumoured Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra may also get a camera upgrade. According to Ice Universe, the new flagship Galaxy S23 Ultra would come with Samsung’s new 200MP camera sensor, the ISOCELL HP3. It should be noted though, that this rumour has been going around since rumours and leaks about Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra were making the rounds, so there is some possibility, that this may not happen with the S23 Ultra as well.

Explained: Samsung’s breakthrough in 3nm chips & how it translates to higher performance and better efficiency

Manufacturers of SoCs have in a never ending race to make their microprocessors as tiny as possible. While chip designers and manufacturers like Apple, Qualcomm and TSMC have aced the 4nm, 5nm & 6nm processors for some time now, Samsung has just made the world’s first 3-nanometer chips.

Explained_Samsung’s breakthrough in 3nm chips & how it translates to higher performance and better efficiency

In doing so, Samsung is now on pace to release the most advanced chips in the world. According to Samsung, the new fabrication process is 45% more power efficient and delivers 23% better performance than the previous 5nm process.

All major SoC and chip manufacturers are vying to make their microprocessors as small as possible. Smaller microprocessors usually mean that the production of an SoC can be more efficient, as well as perform much better. This also means that from the same silicon wafer, a higher number of chips can be made, thus remedying the current chip shortage. For these reasons alone, Samsung’s breakthrough is noteworthy. However, that is not all.

Samsung has achieved this feat using a process called Gate-All-Around transistor architecture (GAA FET), an update on FinFET, on a surface that has a 16% smaller surface area than before.

Samsung said the process would be used for “high performance, low power computing” with mobile processors coming later, and that a second-generation 3nm process will reduce power consumption by 50% and improve performance by 30% on a 35% reduced area.

Being the first to break into the 3nm market shows that Samsung is a major player in the chip manufacturing business. However, the South Korean giant still needs to prove itself against TSMC. The Taiwanese chipmaker dominates the microprocessor market and manufactures chips for Apple’s iPhones, iPods, MacBooks, and Macs. They also supply silicon wafers to companies like Nvidia and AMD. As per a Bloomberg report, TSMC currently accounts for more than half of the global foundry business by revenue.

Samsung and TSMC are currently competing for multi-year deals with Apple and Qualcomm, two mega tech firms awaiting mass production of 3nm chips that could improve the performance of existing products while enabling new technologies. Samsung will manufacture these chips in South Korea at its Hwaseong facilities before expanding to Pyeongtaek. The company is currently building a plant in Texas where it could spend more than $10 billion to produce 3nm chips.
