One-off Rolls-Royce Phantom Oribe revealed, features bespoke elements from Hermes

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has taken the wraps of its latest one-off creation. A work of its Bespoke super-exclusive customisation division, the Rolls Royce Phantom Oribe has been designed in collaboration with Parisian luxury brand Hermes. The Phantom Oribe has been commissioned by Yusaku Maezawa, a Japanese entrepreneur, art collector and supercar enthusiast, wanted his Phantom to be built around the theme of private air travel. For the Phantom Oribe, Rolls-Royce has created a unique shade of Oribe Green for the two-tone green and cream-white colour scheme.

The green shade has been recreated from the 16th century Oribe Japanese ceramic ware that Maezawa is a collector of. Rolls-Royce will even go on to provide this shade for the private jet that the owner wants to pair this Phantom with.

The Phantom Oribe's steering wheel, door handles, gear selector and rotary climate controls are all finished in Hermes Enea Green leather. Image: Rolls-Royce

This Oribe ware theme is replicated on the inside with help from Hermes. Touchpoints like the steering wheel, door handles, gear selector and rotary climate controls are all finished in Hermes Enea Green leather. This material is used throughout the car as well – on the upper dash, door pillars and parcel shelf. In a measure of the attention to detail in this build, this leather also covers the glove box and boot, centre console and even the cooled Champagne cabinet. Hermes uses its expertise to create these elements using techniques originally employed by master saddlers.

Complementing the leather is some high-grade woodwork. Wooden speaker housings are seamlessly integrated into the open-pore walnut wood trims on the doors. The material is also used on the centre console, the rear armrests and the foldable tables. Finishing touches to the trim and upholstery are the Hermes piping on the cushions and recliners, white accents and matching lambswool floor mats.

The piece-de-resistance of the cabin is the artwork crafted by Hermes for the Phantom's Gallery, the housing that displays owner-commissioned pieces in front of the forward passenger seat. Here a design by French artist and illustrator Pierre Peron has been used along with Hermes horse motifs and recreated on an open-pore walnut panel.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Oribe is the latest in a long tradition of completely handcrafted and fully customised works by the brand for owners who just don't want to be seen in another Phantom.

Ford Ranger Raptor X pick-up truck revealed, features cosmetic additions inside and out

While the standard Ford Ranger Raptor is expected to be launched in India sometime this year, Ford has unveiled a more aggressively styled derivative of the 4x4 pick-up in the Australian market. Called the Ford Ranger Raptor X, this version comes with a slew of additions that make the Ranger Raptor stand out even more. The Ranger Raptor X is finished with matte black and red-bordered decals that runs over the bonnet, roof and tailgate. There is another stripe along the sides.

Further, matt black covers most of the extra exterior cladding the Raptor already gets with the grille, bumper, fenders, door handles, mirrors and wheel caps all finished in this material. The carried-over wheel design also gets a similar treatment. Topping this off are red tow hooks and an extended sports bar on the loading bay.

The X edition helps keep the Ford Ranger Raptor stay fresh till the new model arrives by 2023. Image: Ford

The interiors also get a sportier makeover. The original blue stitching on the all-black cabin has been replaced with red on the steering wheel and dash while there are more black accents on the doors and dash.

The Ford Ranger Raptor X remains mechanically unchanged from the standard Raptor. Specific to the Raptor is a reinforced chassis and a unique chassis set-up geared towards high-speed off-roading. The rear suspension has been replaced with a new coil-over arrangement with an integrated Watt's linkage for better lateral stability. The shock absorbers are supplied by Fox, now 63.5mm wide, and offer variable damping while being supported by aluminium control arms. Uprated brakes, a 60 percent thicker bash plate and specially developed BF Goodrich 285/70 R17 tyres are other highlights.

Red stitching and blacked-out elements are exclusive to the Ford Ranger Raptor X's interior. Image: Ford

These additions allow the Ranger Raptor a 283 mm ground clearance and 850 mm wading depth. The 4x4 pick-up has a 32.5-degree approach angle, with ramp-over and departure angles of 24 degrees. The Ranger Raptor is powered by the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel in its twin-turbo guise, making 213 hp and 500 Nm while being paired with the 10-speed torque converter automatic. Aside from the usual drive modes on the Endeavour and Ranger, the Raptor adds a Baja mode that allows for high-speed off-roading.

It's unlikely that the Ford Ranger Raptor X will come to the Indian market with Ford expected to start sales with the standard version, to begin with at least. The Ford Ranger Raptor is expected to be significantly more expensive than the related Ford Endeavour, possibly around Rs 70 lakh (ex-showroom). Originally expected to launch by the first quarter of 2021, the current surge in COVID-19 cases will invariably push back this launch schedule.

About 22 percent of PC users are still running end-of-life Windows 7 OS: Report

A study conducted by cybersecurity company Kaspersky has revealed that as many as 22 percent of personal computer users are still using end-of-life Windows 7 operating system. The findings are based on anonymised data collected from Kaspersky Security Network users, who consented to it. The study has found that less than one percent of PC users have Windows XP and Vista. The support for Windows XP ended in 2014 while for Windows Vista it ended in 2017.

Windows 7 is now 9-years old.

Among the users of Windows 7, almost 22 percent of users are from small and medium businesses (SMBs), and very small businesses (VSBs), as per the press statement by Kaspersky. It further mentions that around 72 percent of users are using Windows 10 which is the latest version of Windows operating systems and also has support. As many as 24 percent of users are running a Windows operating system that does not have mainstream support.

Speaking about the importance of updating the operating system, Oleg Gorobets, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Kaspersky said that the operating system update “fixes bugs that can open a gaping door for cybercriminals to enter”.

He added that regardless of third-party solutions for cybersecurity, OS updates should not be overlooked. Equating OS to a house, Oleg said, “If your house is old and crumbling, there is no point in installing a new door. It makes more sense to find a new home, sooner rather than later”.

The cybersecurity company suggests that in order to protect their data, users should use an updated OS and make sure that the auto-update is enabled.

Colours: Midnight Black, Shimmer Blue

The Vivo X60 Pro is the middle child of the Vivo X60 series that was launched recently. Priced at Rs 49,990 for the 12 GB RAM and 256 GB internal storage version, the X60 Pro slots in between the standard X60 and the fully-loaded X60 Pro+. While it isn’t the top-of-the-line version, it still possesses enough premium features to justify its existence. But how does the Vivo X60 Pro come together as a package? Is this the phone that will best fit your needs on a Rs 50,000 budget? We answer all your questions in our comprehensive review.

Build and Design

The Vivo X60 Pro is available in two colours – Midnight Black and Shimmer Blue. The phone is crazy thin, at just 7.59mm in thickness. The slim form factor, curved screen and glass back panel with a satin texture come together to make this phone a pleasure to hold. The Vivo X60 Pro feels expensive, and the textured power button just adds to the experience.

I tested the Shimmer Blue variant, which I thought looked a little gaudy. The bundled cover does a good job of reducing the shimmer while retaining the slim feel of the phone. It also protects the camera well, considering the module juts out quite a bit. However, I do feel Vivo has prioritised protecting the look and feel of the phone over protecting the phone with this cover. It seems to protect only the four corners of the phone, leaving the sides of the phone to fend for themselves. If the phone landed on any of these sides, the screen (and possibly the glass back panel) could shatter. If I were buying, I would invest in a better cover right away.

Vivo X60 Pro. Image: Jaison Lewis

There is no official IP rating for the X60 Pro, but there is a rubber gasket on the SIM tray which tells me Vivo has done some basic waterproofing to protect the phone. The device is also light, weighing just 179 grams.

In the box, Vivo includes a fast charger and wired earphones. I don’t remember the last time I saw a pair of earphones included, and that put a smile on my face.

However, speaking of audio, there is no stereo sound on this phone – and that’s not the end of the speaker woes. While this tiny little speaker is loud, the output is screechy and generally terrible. It cheapens the overall experience and is probably the reason earphones are included in the bundle. The earphones themselves are of good quality, which is a big plus.

Display

The display is a modest size, at 6.56 inches. It is an AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 2376 x 1080-pixel resolution. While this sounds big, the actual feel and useability of the device are its strengths. Vivo has paid attention to the feel of the phone, and it oozes luxury.

What is not luxurious is the included screen cover. It is rather rubbery, feeling more like packing material than a protector. I would recommend removing it for the complete phone experience.

The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 6 front and back, and should protect it from most scratches. It has HDR10+ certification, which translates into better visuals when gaming and watching movies. It is also bright enough to be legible under direct sunlight.

The screen has a punch-hole camera; that said, I don’t like punch-holes in my screens, especially ones that are positioned top-centre. The dimensions of this phone are so good that I don’t really want anything like an additional bezel or a pop-up camera to mess with it.

Software

The Vivo X60 Pro runs Funtouch OS, which is quite an odd, almost inappropriate name for an OS. It has a minimalistic look which I like, and, in most cases, it works fine. The biggest gripe I have with it is the constant pushing of sponsored content. Since this is the Pro version, Vivo gives me some options to get rid of unnecessary distractions. There is a folder full of Hot App and Games links that I can’t get rid of. It isn’t a good look to call folders in FunTouch OS ‘hot’.

Vivo has also included its own app store to the phone along with Google Play store. However, V-Appstore keeps pushing apps such as Teen Patti, MPL and Snacky Takatak as essentials every time you open it. Again, you cannot delete this extra App store.

The X60 Pro is powered by a Snapdragon 870 chip which has an Adreno 650 GPU. This thing can handle long gaming sessions with ease. Running games on their highest settings is not a problem. Everything runs smoothly and is represented well on the 120Hz display. The 240hz response rate definitely has its benefits in games such as Free Fire. While the phone can handle gaming at max settings, it cannot handle the heat generated. This phone heats up a lot relatively quickly. Genshin Impact took approximately 15 to 20 minutes to get the phone hot. You can still play it, but it isn’t comfortable at that point.

In regular use, the phone remains cool, but extended video watching sessions and heavy app use can make the phone heat up again, but this is nowhere close to how hot the phone gets during heavy gaming sessions.

The Snapdragon 870 may not be the flagship 888, but you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference while using the phone.

Vivo X60 features a quad-camera setup. Image: Jaison Lewis

Camera

It’s in the camera department where the Vivo X60 Pro truly shines. After all, it has to justify the bold ‘Professional Photography’ inscribed right on top of the phone, as well as the Zeiss collaboration.

Sure, it isn’t the X60 Pro + with its fancy camera setup, but this one has a few tricks up its sleeve as well. For starters, the main 48 MP camera has Vivo’s Gimbal Stabilisation 2.0. This thing is a game-changer. The videos from this phone are super-smooth, and with pictures, there is almost no blur, even when capturing a quick-moving subject.

However, the camera does struggle with focus in Macro mode. I had to take several shots of the same subject to snag one without any blur. The other gripe I have with it is the Supermoon mode. It doesn’t work at all. Sure, I got some nice-looking night shots, but no Supermoon shots. I feel the option was only included because it exists in the X60 Pro+, and they forgot to remove it from this one.

Click on the Flickr album below to scroll through camera samples clicked on Vivo X60 Pro.

Vivo X60 Pro review

Speaking of Night Mode, it is deeply impressive and certainly one of the best night modes I have experienced. Colour and details in the shots taken in this mode are excellent. You can do a zoomed-in shot, a wide-angle image or even a night panorama shot, which is something I haven’t seen before.

Portraits – especially ones shot using the main camera – will leave you impressed. The blurred effect is executed well especially around the hair, which is great. There are bokeh effects such as hearts and butterflies that can be added for a fancier shot. The front-facing camera, unfortunately, doesn’t offer the bokeh effects. While portraits shot using the selfie camera look good, the blurred effect isn’t as impressive as with the rear camera.

Colour reproduction in most cases is rather good. There is a bit of a reddish tinge on portraits, but not something that can’t be fixed with some editing.

Video production on this phone also benefits from the gimbal. You can shoot super-smooth video even from the back an auto-rickshaw, and there is even a cinema mode that crops the video into a wide cinema 2.35:1 format. The microphones can also be utilised to focus on subjects, while reducing background noise. What is missing, though, is a Pro video mode, which is a shame since this camera is crying out to be used for filmmaking.

Along with the camera hardware, a lot of the credit goes to the software. The extra settings for each mode have clearly been thought out. And this is precisely what makes the non-working Supermoon mode even more frustrating.

Vivo X60 Pro comes with a 33 W fast charger. Image: Jaison Lewis

Battery

The 4,200 mAh battery capacity on the X60 Pro is a little lower than most phones in this price range, but it doesn’t feel lacking in regular operation. It could easily last a day while performing everyday tasks. However, crank up the intensity to full, and the battery lasts a little over four hours and 30 minutes. Fortunately, the Vivo X60 Pro charges like a champ with the bundled 33 W charger, so a full charge takes approximately an hour and 10 minutes from zero. This charging speed reduces the relevance of a larger battery, and at the same time, lets this phone benefit from an incredibly thin form factor. So, it was well worth the sacrifice.

Conclusion

The Vivo X60 Pro is a phone that I think will find a lot of takers, simply because it is priced right. Despite not being the flagship of the series, it manages to sacrifice precious little in the end. I think a value-conscious market like India will appreciate the balance this phone has managed to achieve.

Vivo does, however, need to rethink FunTouch OS, starting with the name but more deeply with the inclusion of unescapable paid content and app pushes. Vivo: please start sparing the Pro and Pro+ versions of your phones from this. People have paid extra for a better device, charge them a little more so you don’t have to push this content onto them.

Apple’s app tracking transparency is now live with iOS 14.5: How does it work, and should you use it?

Apple users across the globe are adopting the latest operating system update, called iOS 14.5, featuring the now-obligatory new batch of emojis. But there’s another change that’s arguably less fun but much more significant for many users: the introduction of “app tracking transparency”.

This feature promises to usher in a new era of user-oriented privacy, and not everyone is happy — most notably Facebook, which relies on tracking web users’ browsing habits to sell targeted advertising. Some commentators have described it as the beginnings of a new privacy feud between the two tech behemoths.

So, what is app tracking transparency?

App tracking transparency is a continuation of Apple’s push to be recognised as the platform of privacy. The new feature allows apps to display a pop-up notification that explains what data the app wants to collect, and what it proposes to do with it.

There is nothing users need to do to gain access to the new feature, other than install the latest iOS update, which happens automatically on most devices. Once upgraded, apps that use tracking functions will display a request to opt in or out of this functionality.

How does it work?

As Apple has explained, the app tracking transparency feature is a new “application programming interface”, or API — a suite of programming commands used by developers to interact with the operating system.

The API gives software developers a few pre-canned functions that allow them to do things like “request tracking authorisation” or use the tracking manager to “check the authorisation status” of individual apps.

In more straightforward terms, this gives app developers a uniform way of requesting these tracking permissions from the device user. It also means the operating system has a centralised location for storing and checking what permissions have been granted to which apps.

What is missing from the fine print is that there is no physical mechanism to prevent the tracking of a user. The app tracking transparency framework is merely a pop-up box.

It is also interesting to note the specific wording of the pop-up: “ask app not to track”. If the application is using legitimate “device advertising identifiers”, answering no will result in this identifier being set to zero. This will reduce the tracking capabilities of apps that honour Apple’s tracking policies.

Apple's app tracking transparency feature is now live with iOS 14.5.

However, if an app is really determined to track you, there are many techniques that could allow them to make surreptitious user-specific identifiers, which may be difficult for Apple to detect or prevent.

For example, while an app might not use Apple’s “device advertising identifier”, it would be easy for the app to generate a little bit of “random data”. This data could then be passed between sites under the guise of normal operations such as retrieving an image with the data embedded in the filename. While this would contravene Apple’s developer rules, detecting this type of secret data could be very difficult.

Apple seems prepared to crack down hard on developers who don’t play by the rules. The most recent additions to Apple’s App Store guidelines explicitly tells developers:

You must receive explicit permission from users via the App Tracking Transparency APIs to track their activity.

It’s unlikely major app developers will want to fall foul of this policy — a ban from the App Store would be costly. But it’s hard to imagine Apple sanctioning a really big player like Facebook or TikTok without some serious behind-the-scenes negotiation.

Why is Facebook objecting?

Facebook is fuelled by web users’ data. Inevitably, anything that gets in the way of its gargantuan revenue-generating network is seen as a threat. In 2020, Facebook’s revenue from advertising exceeded $84 billion – a 21 percent rise on 2019.

The issues are deep-rooted and reflect the two tech giants’ very different business models. Apple’s business model is the sale of laptops, computers, phones and watches – with a significant proportion of its income derived from the vast ecosystem of apps and in-app purchases used on these devices. Apple’s app revenue was reported at $64 billion in 2020.

With a vested interest in ensuring its customers are loyal and happy with its devices, Apple is well positioned to deliver privacy without harming profits.

Should I use it?

Ultimately, it is a choice for the consumer. Many apps and services are offered ostensibly for free to users. App developers often cover their costs through subscription models, in-app purchases or in-app advertising. If enough users decide to embrace privacy controls, developers will either change their funding model (perhaps moving to paid apps) or attempt to find other ways to track users to maintain advertising-derived revenue.

If you don’t want your data to be collected (and potentially sold to unnamed third parties), this feature offers one way to restrict the amount of your data that is trafficked in this way.

But it’s also important to note that tracking of users and devices is a valuable tool for advertising optimisation by building a comprehensive picture of each individual. This increases the relevance of each advert while also reducing advertising costs (by only targeting users who are likely to be interested). Users also arguably benefit, as they see more (relevant) adverts that are contextualised for their interests.

It may slow down the rate at which we receive personalised ads in apps and websites, but this change won’t be an end to intrusive digital advertising. In essence, this is the price we pay for “free” access to these services. The Conversation

Volkswagen ID.4 GTX debuts with a dual-motor setup, 299 hp and 480-kilometre range

As promised at the Volkswagen ID.4's unveiling in September last year, it's now available with dual-electric motor all-wheel drive as the ID.4 GTX. Going forward, the GTX tag will signify the electric performance sub-brand for Volkswagen, or as the company puts it, "the GTX is the GTI of the EV world". Versus the rear-wheel drive ID.4, the ID.4 GTX takes power up to 299 hp from 204 hp, also slashing the 0-100 kph performance to 6.2 seconds from 8.5 seconds.

At 125 kW charge rates, the ID.4 GTX can gain roughly 300 km of driving range with just a 10-minute charge. Image: Volkswagen

Based on the VW modular electric MEB platform, the same 77 kWh capacity battery packs are sandwiched in the floor pan, and driving range stands at 480 km (WLTP), marginally down on the regular ID.4's 520 km range. At 125 kW charge rates, the ID.4 GTX can gain roughly 300 km of driving range with just a 10-minute charge.

The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX has a zero to 100 kph time of 6.2 seconds. Image: Volkswagen

Visually drawing parallels to the signature honeycomb grille on GTI models, the ID.4 GTX adds to the base ID.4's look with sporty touches like the gloss-black honeycomb air intake at the bottom of the bumper, and three diamond-shaped DRLs under the IQ Light headlights. Wheel sizes (20- and 21-inches) are the same as on the ID.4. Other changes include new bumpers unique to the ID.4 GTX. On the inside, changes are limited to the signature red contrast stitching across the dash and upholstery, while additional drive modes, such as Traction, add to the all-wheel drive capabilities.

Volkswagen also previewed the ID.5 and ID.5 GTX SUV coupes, essentially the ID.4 but with a more sharply rakes roof towards the rear to make for a sportier-looking crossover. We expect Volkswagen to launch the ID.5 SUV coupe abroad towards the end of the year. Meanwhile, Volkswagen India tells us that EVs are on the cards for the country, but only in a few years once the charging infrastructure is better developed.

Germany could lose glaciers sooner than expected, as early as in the next decade: Report

Germany's glaciers are melting at a faster pace than feared and the country could lose its last ice caps in 10 years, an alarming report said Thursday. "The days of glaciers in Bavaria are numbered. And even sooner than expected," said Thorsten Glauber, environment minister of the southern region, home to Germany's ice-capped Alps. "The last Bavarian Alpine glacier could be gone in 10 years." Scientists had previously estimated the glaciers would be around until the middle of the century.

But the melting has accelerated dramatically over the last years.

99 percent of the top layer of the permafrost will melt. image credit: NASA

Located in the Zugspitze area and in the Berchtesgaden Alps, Germany's five glaciers have lost about two-thirds of their volume in the past decade. Their surface areas have also shrunk by a third — equivalent to around 36 football fields.

Issuing a stark warning over global warming, Glauber stressed that the glaciers are "not only a monument of Earth's history in the form of snow and ice".

"They are thermometers for the state of our climate," he added.

A global study released Wednesday found nearly all the world's glaciers are losing mass at an ever-increasing pace, contributing to more than a fifth of global sea-level rise this century.

An international team of researchers analysing images taken by a NASA satellite said that between 2000-2019, the world's glaciers lost an average of 267 billion tonnes of ice each year — enough to submerge Switzerland under six metres of water every year.

The report came as meteorologists in Germany said this April has been the coldest in four decades.

Like elsewhere in Europe, Germany has recorded wild weather in recent years. After a winter in which temperatures plunged well below freezing in February, the mercury rose to 25.9 degrees on 1 April before slipping more than 15 degrees for much of the rest of the month.

Environmentalists blame global warming for the shifts and have been urging governments to do more to halt the damaging trend.

Under the 2015 Paris Agreement countries aim to keep the global temperature increase to under two degrees Celsius, and ideally closer to 1.5 degrees, by 2050.

Climate activists scored a landmark victory Thursday in a case against Chancellor Angela Merkel's government as the Constitutional Court ruled Berlin's environment protection plan insufficient.

Nobel laureates stress ‘existential need’ to act and protect humanity from future risks

The failure to halt climate change, the destruction of nature and other intertwined global crises poses an existential risk to humanity, ten Nobel laureates said Thursday following the first-ever Nobel Prize Summit. Only profound changes in the way society produces, distributes and consumes almost everything — starting with energy — can forestall potentially catastrophic changes, they said in a joint statement, also signed by 20 other top thinkers. "We need to reinvent our relationship with planet Earth," the statement said. "Without transformational action this decade, humanity is taking colossal risks with our common future."

"We are the last generation with a reasonable chance of retaining long-term stability of critical parts of the Earth system," said 30 Nobel laurates during the Nobel Prize Summit.

The risks of pandemics, they noted, are now greater due to the destruction of natural habitats, highly networked societies, and the spread of fake news on social networks.

The Nobel winners said societies must repair and restore the "global commons" that have allowed our species to flourish — the climate, ice, land, ocean, freshwater, forests, soils, and rich diversity of life that regulate the state of the planet.

"There is now an existential need to build economies and societies that support Earth system harmony rather than disrupt it," they warned.

"The next decade is crucial: global greenhouse gas emissions need to be cut by half and destruction of nature halted and reversed."

The amount of CO2 humanity can emit and still cap global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius — our "carbon budget" — will be exhausted before 2030, scientists have calculated.

Earth's average global temperature has already gone up 1.2C compared to preindustrial levels.

At the same time, energy needs are increasing: every week until 2050 Earth's urban population will increase by about 1.3 million.

The Nobel signatories included economists Joseph Stiglitz of Columbia University and Oliver Hart from Harvard, biophysicists William Moerner from Stanford and Jacques Dubochet of Lausanne University, and astrophysicist Brian Schmidt of the Australian National University.

Last generation that can act

There is no Nobel Prize for environmental or Earth science.

"What we are doing amounts to an uncontrolled experiment on Earth’s life-support system," said Earth system scientist Johan Rockstrom, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and a signatory of the statement.

"We are the last generation with a reasonable chance of retaining long-term stability of critical parts of the Earth system."

The planet has sent up one red flag after another of a climate system teetering on the edge of dangerous tipping points, the statement said.

Parts of the Antarctic ice sheet may have already crossed irreversible melting thresholds, and the circulation of North Atlantic currents that ensure temperate winters in Europe has slowed.

Rainforests, permafrost and coral reefs are similarly approaching tipping points.

Widening inequality and distortions in the distribution of information have also reached the level of global crises, the Nobels cautioned.

Humanity is only now "waking up late" to these challenges but still has time to act, the statement said, outlining seven critical areas.

Land Rover Discovery facelift set for India launch by mid-2021, to get three powertrains

Jaguar Land Rover India is expected to launch the facelifted 2021 Land Rover Discovery in the coming months. The SUV has already been listed on the Land Rover India website and should debut here after the revised Jaguar F-Pace launches in May 2021. The website suggests the 2021 Land Rover Discovery facelift will be available in India with three engine options. The diesel option is the D300 with Land Rover's new 3.0-litre inline-six MHEV diesel engine in its 300 hp and 650 Nm guise. This version can do zero to 100 kmph in 6.8 seconds and reach a 209 kph top speed.

There are two petrol engines on offer other than this. The base petrol engine is the P300 version with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine again making 300 hp and 400 Nm. Equipped with this, the facelifted Discovery can get from zero to 100 kph in 7.3 seconds and reach a 201 kph top speed. The top petrol engine is the P360 with its 3.0-litre inline-six MHEV motor that puts out 360 hp and 500 Nm. This can do 0 to 100 kph in 6.5 seconds and reach a 209 kph top speed.

The 2021 Land Rover Discovery will compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLE and the BMW X5. Image: Land Rover

All versions get Land Rover's basic terrain response system, an AWD system, air suspension and a two-speed transfer box. The diesel and top petrol get all of those but not the low range system. However, this can be optioned along with the All-Terrain Progress Control system, the Terrain Response 2 system and an active locking rear differential. The Discovery has a 900 mm wading depth and a 34-degree approach, 27.5-degree breakover and a 30-degree departure angle in the off-road mode. There is also a hill-descent function and a gradient acceleration control system.

The 2021 Land Rover Discovery facelift will be available in standard and R-Dynamic styling packs. Aside from this, there will be three variants on offer - S, SE and HSE. Notable features are the new 11.4-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system, 12.3-inch digital instrumentation, HUD, up to four climate zones, a 14-speaker Meridian audio system, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, a PM2.5 air filter, 19 or 20-inch wheels and 18-way heated front seats.

Safety features include eight airbags, stability and traction control, torque vectoring by braking, TPMS, ABS, EBD and ISOFIX mounts on the front passenger and second-row seats.

Expect the Land Rover Discovery facelift to launch in the Indian market sometime in June 2021. The Discovery will compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLE and the BMW X5, although the Discovery is a seven-seater, unlike these SUVs. Expect prices to start from around Rs 80 lakh (ex-showroom). Meanwhile, Jaguar Land Rover India has started accepting bookings for the facelifted Jaguar F-Pace.

Long-March 5B rocket launches first module of China's 'Heavenly Palace' space station

China launched the first module of its "Heavenly Palace" space station on Thursday, a milestone in Beijing's ambitious plan to establish a permanent human presence in space. Billions of dollars have been poured into space exploration as China seeks to reflect its rising global stature and growing technological might, following in the footsteps of the United States, Russia and Europe. The Tianhe core module, which houses life support equipment and a living space for astronauts, was launched from Wenchang in China's tropical Hainan province on a Long-March 5B rocket on Thursday, state television showed.

In this image taken from undated video footage run by China's CCTV via AP Video, a rendering of a module of a Chinese space station is shown. China has launched the core module on Thursday, April 29, 2021 for its first permanent space station that will host astronauts long-term. (CCTV via AP Video)

Chinese President Xi Jinping called the space station a key step in "building a great nation of science and technology" in a congratulatory message Thursday.

The Tiangong space station, whose name means "Heavenly Palace", is expected to be operational by 2022 after around 11 missions to deliver more modules and assemble them in orbit.

Live footage from state broadcaster CCTV showed space programme employees cheering as the rocket powered its way through the atmosphere billowing flames from the launch site.

Crowds wearing sunhats and wielding smartphone cameras gathered under the coconut trees of a nearby beach to watch the launch as a band played in photos published by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.

"A palace in the sky will no longer be just a romantic fantasy of the ancients," the CCTV anchor said.

The completed station will be similar to the Soviet "Mir" station that orbited Earth from the 1980s until 2001.

The Chinese space station is expected to remain in low orbit at between 400 and 450 kilometres above Earth for a lifespan of around 15 years.

The completed station, weighing little more than 90 tons, will be around a quarter the size of the International Space Station.

The station will have two other modules for scientific study and will be equipped with solar panels as well as experimental equipment including an ultracold atomic experiment apparatus, according to the Chinese Society of Astronautics.

The core module will give three astronauts 50 cubic metres of living space, equipped with advanced telecommunications equipment that will allow astronauts to browse websites "no differently from normal people using the internet and phones on Earth", Bai Linhou, deputy chief designer of the space station, told CCTV.

China launched the Tiangong-1 lab, its first prototype module intended to lay the groundwork for the permanently crewed station, in September 2011.

The lab disintegrated on re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere in 2018, two years after it ceased functioning.

A second lab, the Tiangong-2, was launched into orbit in 2016.

Space ambitions

The International Space Station — a collaboration between the US, Russia, Canada, Europe and Japan — is due to be retired after 2024, although NASA has said it could potentially remain functional beyond 2028.

With the retirement of the ISS, which received its first crew in 2000, China's Tiangong could become the only space station in Earth's orbit.

Beijing does not have specific plans to use its space station for international cooperation like the ISS, but Chinese space authorities have said they are open to foreign collaboration, although the scope of that cooperation is as yet unclear.

The European Space Agency has sent astronauts to China to receive training in order to be ready to work inside the Chinese space station once it is launched.

China also said in March it was planning to build a separate lunar space station with Russia.

The facility, planned for either the surface or the orbit of the Moon, would house experimental research facilities and would be Beijing's biggest international space cooperation project to date.

The country has come a long way since its first satellite in 1970.

It put the first Chinese "taikonaut" in space in 2003 and landed the Chang'e-4 robot on the far side of the Moon in 2019 -- a historic first.

The Chinese space programme sent a probe into Mars' orbit earlier this year. The wheeled probe is expected to touch down on the surface of Mars in mid-May.

Twitter earned $86 million in latest quarter, revenue grew 28 percent

Like its bigger tech peers, Twitter posted stronger-than-expected results for the first quarter on Thursday. But its lukewarm outlook sent shares tumbling after hours. The San Francisco-based company earned $68 million, or 8 cents per share, in the January-March period. That’s up from a loss of $8.4 million, or 1 cent per share, a year earlier.

Revenue grew 28 percent to $1.04 billion. Analysts, on average, were expecting a loss of 2 cents per share on revenue of $1.03 billion, according to a poll by FactSet.

In a tumultuous start to the year, Twitter permanently suspended its arguably most powerful and polarising user — former President Donald Trump — from its platform in January after the deadly riots at the US Capitol.

Twitter logo. Reuters

It had also suspended more than 150,000 other accounts across its platform for what it described as “propagating a conspiracy theory” linked to dangerous behavior offline. Primarily these accounts were linked to QAnon, the unfounded conspiracy theory that claims Trump is waging a secret battle against the “deep state” and a sect of powerful devil-worshipping pedophiles.

While the suspensions irked certain users, Twitter executives insist they want a “healthy conversation” on the platform and are willing to take some heat for enforcing rules.

“When it comes to the Twitter Rules, we recognize that politicians and government officials are constantly evolving how they use the service, and we want our policies to remain relevant to the everchanging nature of political discourse on Twitter,” the company said in a statement Thursday. To this end, Twitter is seeking public input on its rules.

Twitter had 199 million daily users, on average, in the third quarter, up 20 percent year-over-year and slightly below the 200 million that analysts were expecting.

By comparison, Facebook had 1.88 billion daily users on average in March 2021, an increase of 8 percent year-over-year. Snapchat, meanwhile, had 280 million average daily active users in the first quarter.

Twitter does not disclose monthly user figures.

Twitter said it expects revenue between $980 million and $1.08 billion for the second quarter. The midpoint of that is below analysts’ expectations of $1.06 billion.

Twitter’s stock fell $6.21, or 9.5 percent, to $58.88 in after-hours trading.

RIP, loneliest man in history: Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins passes away at 90

American astronaut Michael Collins, who piloted the Apollo 11 command module while his crewmates became the first people to walk on the Moon, died on Wednesday after battling cancer, his family said. Sometimes called "the loneliest man in history" because of his long solo flight while his colleagues loped across the lunar surface, Collins never earned the same global name recognition as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. But he was hailed as a lifelong advocate of space exploration: erudite and witty yet also self-effacing, maintaining in a 2009 interview with NASA that his historic accomplishments were "90 percent blind luck" and that astronauts should not be celebrated as heroes.

"Mike always faced the challenges of life with grace and humility, and faced this, his final challenge, in the same way," Collins' family posted on his official Twitter account.

Crewmate Aldrin led the tributes, writing on Twitter: "Dear Mike, Wherever you have been or will be, you will always have the Fire to Carry us deftly to new heights and to the future. We will miss you. May you Rest In Peace."

US President Joe Biden said that while Collins "may not have received equal glory," he was "an equal partner, reminding our nation about the importance of collaboration in service of great goals."

Born in Rome in 1930 to a US army officer serving as military attache there, Collins went on to become a fighter pilot and test pilot with the air force. He applied to NASA after being inspired by John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, and was selected to be an astronaut in 1963.

Collins' first spaceflight was on the Gemini 10 mission, where he made a then record-breaking two spacewalks.

But he is best known for being a member of the Apollo 11 mission when, on 20 July 1969, his crewmates Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took their giant leaps for mankind.

Remarking on Collins' role, a NASA press officer would later tell reporters: "Not since Adam has any human known such solitude."

Collins spent half a century trying to debunk that myth.

"I would enjoy a perfectly enjoyable hot coffee, I had music if I wanted to," he said at a 50th anniversary event in 2019. "Good old Command Module Columbia had every facility that I needed, and it was plenty big and I really enjoyed my time by myself instead of being terribly lonely."

Mike Collins, the third man of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission, sits at his State Department desk in Washington, US. Image: AP.

He was worried, however, that Armstrong and Aldrin might not make it back alive -- remarking once that being the mission's sole survivor would have made him "a marked man for life."

World in my window

Ultimately, Apollo 11 was a success and after the crew splashed down in the Pacific, they embarked on a worldwide tour, at the end of which they were all awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Collins would go on to say the Moon mission forever changed his perspective, impressing upon him the fragility of our home planet and the need to protect it.

"When we rolled out and looked at (the Moon), oh, it was an awesome sphere," he said at a 2019 event at George Washington University.

But "as magnificent as that was, as impressive, and as much as I will remember that, that was nothing, nothing compared to this other window out there," he continued.

"Out there was this little pea about the size of your thumbnail at arm's length: blue, white, very shiny, you get the blue of the oceans, white of the clouds, streaks of rust we call continents, such a beautiful gorgeous tiny thing, nestled into this black velvet of the rest of the universe."

"Hey, Houston, I've got the world in my window," he told mission control.

Collins turned down an offer to command his own Moon mission and went on to become a diplomat, serving as assistant secretary of state for public affairs.

He later became the first director of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, and authored numerous books on space including his well-received autobiography "Carrying the Fire."

He retired in Florida, living with his wife Pat until she died in 2014.

Asked by Fox News in 2019 whether he thinks much about Apollo 11, he said: "Not very often."

"I lead a quiet life. I'll be walking along down my street at night, when it's starting to get dark and I sense something over my right shoulder and I look up and see that little silver sliver up there and think, 'Oh that's the Moon. I've been there!'

Suzuki Misano EV roadster concept revealed: A future e-sportscar hiding in plain sight?

The wraps are off the Suzuki Misano EV roadster concept, commissioned by Suzuki from the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Turin, Italy. For decades, Suzuki has been making compact cars as well as a wide range of motorcycles, and to signify the company’s ‘two souls’, Suzuki wanted a concept that would represent the best of both worlds. A team of 24 masters students – from countries including India, Italy, Turkey, France, Lebanon, Israel, Spain, Albania and Belgium – at IED Turin set to work on this concept in 2020, which has been named after the Misano World Circuit motorcycle racetrack.

The Suzuki Misano aims to combine the spirit of a motorcycle with the capability of a car. Image: Suzuki

At 4,000 mm in length, 1,750 mm in width and just 1,000 mm in height, the Suzuki Misano is a small, wide and low roadster with two seats, but not in the traditional side-by-side layout. To recreate the motorcycling experience, the Suzuki Misano has a tandem seating layout, with the cockpit offset to the left, and there’s even a small windscreen to add to the two-wheeler effect. In fact, Suzuki went a step ahead and swapped out the steering wheel for a motorcycle handlebar-style yoke!

The driver-side door of the Suzuki Misano features a glass panel to provide a glimpse of the surface the car is on. Image: Suzuki

As a result, there’s only a single rollover hoop on the left side, and the battery pack and a trunk are what you’ll find on the right side of the Misano. However, no details on the battery pack itself or any other technical details have been shared.

In terms of styling, the Suzuki Misano sports clean lines and smooth surfacing, with arrow-shaped LED lights adding some aggression to the face. A glass panel has been incorporated into the door on the driver’s side (there’s no door on the right side), rose gold accents offset the concept’s grey paint scheme, OZ Racing wheels – shod in Pirelli tyres – add volume to the wheel arches and standouts at the back are the slim LED tail-lights and a full-size diffuser.

The Suzuki Misano EV measures in at just 4,000 mm in length. Image: Suzuki

There is no word on whether Suzuki envisions the Misano concept as a precursor to a future production sportscar. Suzuki has collaborated with IED in the past, and while the Misano has plenty of show car elements – such as the handlebar in place of a steering wheel – it is also not too far removed from a road-ready sportscar. Suzuki is hoping to make a big push into the world of electric vehicles, and an all-electric sportscar could well reaffirm its image as a maker of compact-yet-fun cars.

Technical glitch keeps Ingenuity helicopter grounded on fourth Mars flight attempt

NASA's Mars Ingenuity helicopter missed its fourth scheduled flight on Thursday, with the space agency blaming a software glitch and vowing to try again the next day. "The helicopter is safe and in good health," said a statement, adding the rotorcraft had failed to transition to "flight mode." The team plans to attempt the flight once more on Friday at 8.16 pm IST (10:46 am Eastern Time) with data expected back at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory around three hours later.

The Mars Helicopter, Ingenuity, is a technology demonstration to test powered flight on another world for the first time. It is hitching a ride on the Perseverance rover. Image credit: NASA

The software issue is thought to be the same one that delayed Ingenuity's maiden voyage, the first powered flight on another planet. Initially scheduled for 11 April, the historic feat occurred on 19 April.

The reason was a glitch associated with the aircraft's "watchdog timer," which alerts Ingenuity to potential problems and pauses its processes if it thinks it has detected an error.

Engineers made a coding tweak that allowed Ingenuity to overcome the problem and transition to flight mode correctly — but estimated there was a 15 percent chance it would not work on each flight attempt.

"Today's delay is in line with that expectation and does not prevent future flight," NASA said.

Since reaching Mars in February under the belly of the Perseverance rover, the 1.8 kilograms helicopter has made three successful flights.

The last, which took place Sunday, saw it move faster and further than ever before, with a peak speed of 6.6 feet (two meters) per second. It covered 50 meters of distance.

Ingenuity's flights are challenging because of conditions vastly different from Earth's — foremost among them a rarefied atmosphere that has less than one percent the density of our own and means it has to spin its rotors at 2,400 revolutions per minute.

The Ingenuity technology demonstration will end in early May to allow the Perseverance rover to return to its main task: searching for signs of past microbial life on Mars.

Hey Joe Rogan, check your privilege, and your facts

Joe Rogan, on his The Joe Rogan Experience (JRE) podcast, advised healthy people to not take the COVID-19 vaccine. He went on to talk about vaccinating children and spoke about his own kids' experience with the virus. Fellow comedian and podcaster Dave Smith joined him on the episode that aired on 23 April. The entire podcast spanned 193 minutes.

The three-hour podcast was two hours too long. The last time I willingly sat to watch anything that long was Snyder's Cut of Justice League, which was at least well worth the time spent.

Joe Rogan - Podcast host, commentator, comedian. Image credit: YouTube

The entire conversation, like most of Rogan's podcasts over the 12 years it has been active, was in a lighter vein. And that's what makes his podcasts so enjoyable for most of his 190 million listeners. He is clearly doing something right if he is one of Spotify's top listened-to podcasters in 2020. He was paid a whopping $100 million to make his audio-video podcast exclusive to the music platform.

This podcast, though, reeks of privilege and an ignorant person talking to another ignorant person about a situation they escaped unscathed, trivialising the pain and suffering of the hundreds of thousands of people who have lost their lives or been greatly affected by the virus.

The first 20 minutes were boring, but it was at the 24-minute mark that the anti-vaxxer opinions started to flow and were dispersed throughout the episode. They started by talking about a mutual friend - Ari Shaffir - getting his Moderna shot.

Rogan said, "He (Shaffir) got shot up with the Moderna as soon as he got back."

"I'm like that's the one that is supposed to give you the worst side effects, buddy. Allegedly," he continued, with Smith 'hmm-ing' along.

Both comedians were on a roll, and the next thing Rogan talked about was "how masks do not work at all" and mentioned a doctor's YouTube video (Here is scientific information on how and why wearing a mask protects one from COVID-19).

There is plenty of back and forth between the two, with Rogan and Smith seemingly having an issue with anything and everything pandemic-related. During their entire tirade, all I could think of was – "Put that tin foil cap away, guys. Your paranoia is showing." An ironic thought, since they jokingly mentioned wearing tin foil hats several times on the episode.

Out of all the inane things said on this podcast, Rogan topped it off with "As a global pandemic, we got really lucky. I mean it could've been a Spanish flu, it could've been something that really does wipe out..." he stopped short of completing that sentence. Maybe common sense took hold.

The Spanish flu, according to some estimates, killed 50 million people. That is a lot higher than the three million deaths COVID-19 has caused so far. We have managed to avoid that number because governments put in place lockdown orders, mask-wearing and handwashing guidelines and pushed research in medicines and vaccines. Should we have waited and watched while people suffered? Isn’t this a good thing? Isn’t hindsight our biggest weapon against future outbreaks?

Dave Smith, comedian, podcaster at The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Image credit: YouTube

However, always the yes-man, Smith bemoaned the fact that he can't be vocal about his opinion as people won't like it. God forbid you’re not allowed to talk smack about people dying during the pandemic. How does one survive without an ounce of human decency?

If Rogan thinks this virus hasn’t had as significant an impact as it could have, here are a few India-specific numbers to open his eyes.

India, according to the Delhi High Court, is currently facing a “tsunami” of new COVID-19 cases. 3,79,257 fresh infections and 3,645 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. We have been recording over three lakh new cases every day for over a week now.

Over the course of their brain-melting conversation, they mentioned reading the science, listening to the science, following the science behind the virus and the vaccine. I couldn’t help but wonder if they had actually taken the time and effort to read the science, considering their stance, or did they just selectively read the stuff that supported the argument they want to make?

Science is never definite and is constantly changing. During a pandemic, it is changing even quicker with studies, analysis, and reports coming out daily. It is nearly impossible to keep up with everything, but if you are going to use your platform to put out strong opinions, it’s best you arm yourself with sufficient knowledge.

Special mention: JRE does have a producer/fact-checker/ Google master overseeing the operation. This entire podcast would’ve provided them with plenty of homework if they were up to it.

Smith said, “Well, imagine if kids died, how much worse the panic would be” with the same tonal voice one would use when discussing the weather or an irksome pet. And I would like to ask them - does mostly adults dying make this situation any better?

Rogan bragged that he hasn’t been sick in 15 years and went on to explain why. Along with popping vitamins, he also boasted that he does a daily sauna session, is on testosterone and exercises daily.

Well, good for you, Joe. You are taking care of yourself. But it would be unwise to overlook the fact that you can afford to do this. Not everyone has the same spending power, but that doesn't mean they deserve to suffer from the virus, or worse, die.

Rogan stated he is not against the vaccine. He tried to get it himself during the UFC 261 pay-per-view, but for some reason, couldn’t do so. He said his parents are vaccinated and said vulnerable people should take the vaccine. However, he added that if you’re 21 years old, exercising “all the time” and healthy, you don't need to get vaccinated. Smith also said something similar a little earlier in the podcast.

“I don't think you need to worry about this (COVID-19),” said Rogan.

During his tirade, Rogan diminished the coronavirus experience because his children weren't affected too much, "akin to them getting a cold." Smith also firmly stated that he won’t be vaccinating his offspring, for the sake of virtue-signalling.

After their constant digs at White House’s chief medical advisor Dr Anthony Fauci, the good doctor spoke to the Today show and said, “You’re talking about yourself in a vacuum. If you want to only worry about yourself and not society, then that’s OK.”

Fauci also added that healthy, young people should “absolutely” get vaccinated.

After this episode aired, there has been a lot of debate, with Twitter opinions split about the comedians’ stance. But when more than three million people have died because of this virus and the US is currently leading the charge, now is not the time to be a woke bro.

Maybe Rogan needs a reminder that children and newborn babies have died because of this virus. Many young and healthy people have died or have been affected so badly they are still facing the effects of long COVID. Parents, grandparents, people of all races and ethnicities and age groups have died of this virus that started at the end of 2019.

Maybe Rogan needs a sign that says "Check your privilege" as a famous, rich, white male living in one of the most developed countries in the world with access to quality healthcare.

Rogan needs to remember that being humane, compassionate and kind are qualities everyone needs to possess during a time of global crisis.

He definitely needs someone to nudge him into using his platform to spread the right information in the midst of a worldwide humanitarian crisis that doesn't seem to have an end in sight.

An apology is in order for dismissing the experience of hundreds of people with a little "no offence but..."

Here is a list of other COVID-19-related thoughts that Rogan and Smith shared during the episode:

  • Ivermectin is 99 percent effective against COVID-19, but Rogan thinks no one is talking about it. This, he believes, is because it will somehow stop people from taking the vaccine if there is an effective medicine – This is completely untrue. Recently, WHO conducted an analysis of several studies and found Ivermectinis not as effective as some think it to be, and there isn’t enough evidence to suggest otherwise. Read the report here.
  • Lockdowns were ineffective and were done as a way to control us – Lockdowns were initiated as a way to stop the spread of the virus when not much was known about it. Studies have shown they saved lives and also managed to help the Earth heal for a brief period. They resulted in cleaner air and water, a drop in pollution levels and a growth in local wildlife. You can read an analysis of the lockdowns’ effectiveness here.
  • There was some talk about how the virus cannot spread via surfaces and everyone went berserk cleaning their groceries for no reason – There was a lot that was unknown at the start of the pandemic, but as studies were conducted, changes were made. It is not true that surface transmission cannot take place. However, the possibility is low. But why do we have an issue with hygiene and cleaning surfaces and groceries? Read an epidemiologist’s POV here.
  • Rogan mentioned that some doctors spoke about ventilators killing people during the pandemic, but that information was shut down and no one was talking about it – That is untrue. Some of the major news outlets spoke to doctors and reported on this topic. Read here.
  • Another nugget that Rogan so generously passed onto us was that one can fight COVID-19 by being outside in the sun and absorbing Vitamin D – Having a balance of all vitamins and minerals along with a healthy lifestyle will help in fighting all diseases. However, taking Vitamin D pills or even getting it naturally from the Sun will not help fight the virus. It will help if you have a deficiency. Read more here.
  • The most controversial of all statements on this podcast was Rogan telling “young and healthy” people to avoid getting vaccinated because they don't have to worry about getting infected – There is no scientific evidence to back this statement. People of all ages are contracting the virus. While it is true that the virus mostly harms the elderly, recent trends have shown that now even younger adults are getting infected. Read here.

MoRTH proposes ‘IN’ registration series for cars to make inter-state transfers easier

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed a new series of vehicles registrations, replacing the state code with a pan-India IN code for personal vehicles. This is being done to do away with the complex re-registration process that vehicle owners have to go through to re-register their vehicles when relocating to a different state. In a pilot project, this facility will be initially available to defence personnel, employees of Central Government, State Governments, Central/ State PSUs and private sector companies/organisations, which have their offices in five or more States/Union Territories.

This facility can be opted for voluntarily and can be opted for on new and existing vehicles, the various states registration processes remain intact.

There will be a standard motor vehicle tax across the country for vehicles registered under this scheme, which will be levied for two years or in multiples of two years.

A uniform road tax rate has been proposed which will be eight percent for vehicles under Rs 10 lakh, 10 percent for those valued between Rs 10-20 lakh, and 12 percent for vehicles above Rs 20 lakh. Diesel cars may be charged a two percent additional tax while EVs may see a two percent cut.

The proposal has been sent to State governments for review and a final resolution will be passed post this. The aim of this is to do away with the complex re-registration process when moving to a new state.

Currently, owners need to re-register their vehicles in a new State within 12 months of moving there. This includes obtaining a NOC from the State the vehicle was originally registered in, have the new registration number assigned in the new state and then obtain a refund from the previous state.

Apple reportedly starts manufacturing M2 chipset, may debut in July

The follow-up to M1, Apple’s custom mac processor, has entered mass production this month, as per a report by Nikkei Asia. The new chipset, tentatively known as M2 or M1X, is produced by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, Apple’s major supplier and the world's largest contract chipmaker, using 5-nanometer plus, or N5P, the latest semiconductor production technology.

People familiar with the matter said that the shipments of the new chipset are slated to begin as early as July for use in MacBooks that are scheduled to go on sale in the second half of 2021. It could take as long as three months to produce such advanced chips.

Apple has been extending its product portfolio with M1, with its last week’s announcement of introducing a new iMac and refreshed iPad Pro models that will use its in-house, Arm-based chips. The M1 is based on Arm's chip blueprints, a UK chip designer, which underpins most processors used in smartphones.

Apple announced the new M1 chipset in November 2020.

The M1 delivers CPU performance up to 85 percent faster compared to an iMac up to 50-percent faster CPU performance on the new iPad Pro, both use an Intel chipset, and graphics performance that is twice as fast, the company said. The two products will be available for pre-order on Friday and will be shipped in the second half of May.

The introduction of M2 indicated Apple’s future move towards eliminating Intel chips for its Mac- product line CPUs. Apple unveiled M1 in November 2020 and is about five months into the two-year transition away from Intel whose microprocessors dominated the computer industry for decades with its X-86 chip built.

"It's now an irreversible trend that Apple will eventually use only its chips in its computer products. ... Macs have their ecosystem as well as user base because they run on Apple's own operating systems instead of Microsoft Windows,", Joey Yen, an analyst with IDC, told Nikkei Asia. "So far, Apple has made a successful debut, and the integrated experience has also been satisfying based on general customers' feedback,” he shared.

However, Yen said it "remains to be seen" whether Apple's shift will drive other computer makers, such as HP, Dell, and Lenovo, to follow its suit by replacing Intel’s chips in products designed by Qualcomm or MediaTek.

Poco X3 Pro, Motorola G60 to Narzo 30 Pro 5G: Best phones under Rs 20,000 (April-May 2021)

When you’re looking for a new smartphone on a Rs 20,000 budget, you expect ample processing power, good cameras, sharp displays, high refresh rate screens and more. But our list of the best phones under Rs 20,000 this month has devices with even more advanced features that were previously reserved for models from higher price brackets not too long ago. You can now get a 5G-compliant phone in this price bracket and also ones with 108 MP cameras. Time to look at our top picks for you this month.

Best phones to buy under Rs 20,000 in India (April-May 2021)

Poco X3 Pro

The new Poco X3 Pro (review) is one powerful device that’s loaded with features. It has a 6.67-inch Full HD+ display with a 120 Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling and a flicker-free experience in compatible apps. The screen is protected against scratches by a layer of Gorilla Glass 6. A small punch-hole at the top of the screen hosts a 20MP camera for selfies and video calls. The phone is powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 860 SoC, which is pretty much a rebranded Snapdragon 855+ that was Qualcomm’s flagship chip not too long ago. That translates into ample processing power for anything you would generally do on your phone, including gaming.

You get 6 GB RAM with 128 GB of internal storage in this budget. The Poco X3 Pro has a quad-camera setup at the back, but strangely, it’s a step down from its non-pro variant. Here, you get a combination of 48 MP primary camera, 8 MP ultra-wide camera, 2 MP macro camera and a 2 MP depth sensor. In comparison, the Poco X3 has a 64 MP primary camera and a 13 MP ultrawide camera, while the remaining two cameras are the same. Despite that, camera quality is comparable and quite good in general. Its 5,160 mAh battery easily lasts over a day and a half of moderate use. The company also bundles a 33 W fast charger to juice it up quickly. The phone runs Android 11 with MIUI 12 on top.

Poco X3 Pro price in India: Rs 18,999 for 6 GB RAM / 128 GB storage

Realme Narzo 30 Pro 5G

The Realme Narzo 30 Pro 5G (review) is currently one of the most affordable 5G phones in India. It is powered by Mediatek’s new Dimensity 800U SoC. You get two variants of the phone in this budget, with either 6 GB RAM and 64 GB storage or 8 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage. The Narzo 30 Pro’s design is quite elegant, as one would expect from this series. Battery capacity has been bumped up to 5,000 mAh, but the company does not bundle a 65 W SuperDart charger with this phone as it did with its predecessor, the Narzo 20 Pro. You get a respectable 30 W Dart charger here that charges the phone fully in just over an hour.

You get a triple-camera setup at the back that consists of a 48 MP primary camera, 8 MP ultra-wide snapper and a 2 MP macro camera. You also get a 16 MP selfie camera located in a tiny punch-hole on top of the screen. The Realme Narzo 30 Pro has a 6.5-inch Full HD+ display that claims to get as high as 600 nits bright. You also get a 120 Hz refresh rate here for smooth scrolling. The phone runs Android 10 with Realme UI on top.

Realme Narzo 30 Pro 5G price in India: Rs 16,999 for 6 GB RAM / 64 GB storage; Rs 19,999 for 8 GB RAM / 128 GB storage

Redmi Note 10 Pro / Pro Max

The Redmi Note 10 Pro and Note 10 Pro Max are almost identical phones except for one major difference. The Pro has a 64 MP primary camera, while the Max variant flaunts a 108 MP primary shooter. The rest of the features are pretty much the same, but you have to pay a Rs 3,000 premium for the extra megapixels. The respective primary cameras are accompanied by an 8 MP ultra-wide camera, a 5 MP macro camera and a 2 MP depth sensor. Camera performance with both phones is quite impressive for the segment. Both have a 16 MP front camera to take care of selfies and video calls.

Redmi Note 10 Pro Max

The phones have large, 6.67-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED displays that can get up to 1200 nits bright (in theory) and are protected against scratches by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. That’s not all – the screens are HDR10-compliant and have a 120 Hz refresh rate as well. The Redmi Note 10 Pro series is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 732G SoC and comes with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage that can be expanded further with a microSD card. Both phones have 5,020 mAh batteries that last over 36 hours of moderate use. The phones run Android 11 with MIUI 12.

Redmi Note 10 Pro price in India: Rs 16,999 for 6 GB RAM / 128 GB storage
Redmi Note 10 Pro Max price in India: Rs 19,999 for 6 GB RAM / 128 GB storage

Realme 8 Pro

The Realme 8 Pro (review) is another phone in this segment that flaunts a 108 MP camera. The phone looks stylish and is quite slim, at just 8.1mm in thickness. It has a 6.4-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display that can get up to 1000 nits bright. However, unlike some other phones on this list, it does not have the higher 120 Hz refresh rate feature. One striking feature here is the bundled 50 W SuperDart charger that can take its 4,500 mAh battery from 0 to 100 percent in a little over 45 minutes; that is seriously quick, though not the fastest around. The phone runs Android 11 with Realme UI 2.0 on top.

Realme 8 Pro

The Realme 8 Pro is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 720G SoC that is still more than decent for most tasks. You either get 6 GB or 8 GB RAM, along with 128 GB of internal memory that can be expanded further using a MicroSD card. This phone, too, has four cameras at the back starting with the aforementioned 108 MP primary camera that does a good job in various lighting conditions. You also get an 8 MP ultra-wide camera, a 2 MP macro camera and a 2 MP depth sensor. The 16 MP front camera does a good job with selfies and video calls.

Realme 8 Pro price in India: Rs 17,999 for 6 GB RAM / 128 GB storage; Rs 19,999 for 8 GB RAM / 128 GB storage

Motorola G60

The brand-new Motorola G60 is another solid addition to our list. And guess what? This one also has a 108 MP camera at the back. This phone is powered by a Snapdragon 732G chip and is accompanied by 6 GB RAM and 128 GB internal (expandable) storage. It has a huge 6.8-inch Full HD+ display with HDR10 compliance and a 120 Hz refresh rate. A tiny punch-hole at the top centre hosts a 32 MP front camera that is bound to excite selfie enthusiasts.

Moto G60

Giving the 108MP primary camera company are an 8 MP ultrawide shooter and a 2 MP depth sensor. Battery backup is quite solid, with a 6,000 mAh battery keeping the phone powered for over two days of moderate use. It also supports 20 W fast charging with QuickCharge 4. Last but by no means the least, the OS. If you love stock Android UI, this is the phone for you. Like most Motorola phones, the G60 has stock UI, and runs Android 11 out of the box.

Motorola G60 price in India: Rs 17,999 for 6 GB RAM / 128 GB storage
