China grants 'conditional approval' to Sinopharm's COVID-19 vaccine

China authorized its first homegrown COVID-19 vaccine for general use Thursday, adding another shot that could see wide use in poorer countries as the virus surges back around the globe.

The Sinopharm vaccine had already been given to groups such as health care professionals and essential workers under emergency-use guidelines as part of China’s program to inoculate 50 million people before the Lunar New Year holiday in February. But the go-ahead should allow it to be supplied more broadly at home and moves Beijing closer to being able to ship it abroad. It comes one day after British regulators authorized AstraZeneca’s inexpensive and easy-to-handle vaccine.

Both shots have been closely watched by developing countries, many of which have been unable to secure the Pfizer and Moderna doses being snapped up by rich nations. Pakistan’s science minister said Thursday that his government will buy 1.2 million doses of a Sinopharm shot, two days after its death toll topped 10,000.

The greenlight came a day after the state-owned company announced that preliminary data from last-stage trials had shown it to be 79.3 percent effective. That announcement did not detail the size of the control group, how many people were vaccinated and at what point the efficacy rate was reached after injection, and experts have cautioned that trial data needs to be shared.

Officials have said the vaccine standards were developed in “close cooperation” with the World Health Organization. Securing WHO’s so-called pre-qualification could go some way toward assuring the rest of the world about the quality of Chinese vaccines, which already face a reputation problem back home. It would also open the path for the shots to be distributed in the global vaccine consortium, COVAX, and potentially in countries that don’t have their own regulatory agencies.

China is eager to ship its vaccines globally, driven by a desire to repair the damage to its image caused by the pandemic that started a year ago in the central city of Wuhan.

Technically, China granted conditional approval for the vaccine, meaning that research is still ongoing, and the company will be required to submit follow-up data as well as reports of any adverse effects after the vaccine is sold on the market, Chen Shifei, the deputy commissioner of the National Medical Products Administration, told a news conference. Final proof of its effectiveness will depend on publication of more data.

Sinopharm, which has another shot under development, is one of at least five Chinese developers that are in a global race to create vaccines for the disease that has killed more than 1.8 million people. While the Pfizer and Moderna shots have been greeted with much fanfare in the West, those shots must be stored at ultra-cold or freezer temperatures, complicating distribution.

The Sinopharm vaccine, like the AstraZeneca one, could be easier for countries around the world to handle since they can be stored at normal fridge temperatures.

Both shots, as well as Russia’s Sputnik, are expected to be supply much of the developing world. That means the cost will also be important. AstraZeneca is expected to cost about $2.50 a dose, while Russia has said its doses will be priced at $10 for the global market. Pfizer’s vaccine costs about $20, while Moderna’s is $15 to $25, based on agreements with the U.S. government.

Chinese officials declined to name a particular price and gave conflicting statements about it. One official said it would be affordable for the Chinese public, but another jumped in to clarify that it will be free. President Xi Jinping had previously vowed to donate a Chinese-made vaccine as a public good to the world.

The Sinopharm shot is already under mass production, though officials did not answer questions about current capacity. It has already been approved in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, and is slated for use next in Morocco.

Other countries have also been buying doses of another Chinese vaccine candidate, made by Sinovac Biotech. Turkey received shipments this week of 3 million doses, and Indonesia and Brazil have also purchased it.

Belarus and Argentina both launched mass vaccinations Wednesday using Russia’s vaccine, and Guinea has begun giving it to government officials.

In addition to the emergency vaccinations already underway in China, the country plans to start vaccinating high-risk population, such as seniors as well as people with existing chronic illnesses. Officials did not say what percentage of the population they will vaccinate in China.

“This is very exciting that there is another vaccine and one that can be distributed in locations that don’t have the cold chain,” said Ashley St. John, an immunologist at the Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. “But at the same time we have to temper the excitement. We have to understand the long term efficacy, effect on transmission and effect on severe disease.”

Lockdown legends Part 4: The tech that got me through the lockdown feat. Dell Inspiron Laptop, iQOO 3, JBL earphones

Editor's Note: This story is part of a series about tech gadgets and devices that helped Team tech2 and some of our friends through the pandemic, lockdown, and the year 2020, in general.

The pandemic is a black swan event; unbeknownst to us it has changed our lives in the most unexpected way. But with everyone bemoaning their fate – stuck at home, cut off from their routine and life in the city – I was maybe one of the few people that actually didn’t have much to say about the entire sordid saga that has become our 'new normal,' A homebody by nature and as someone who dreads the four hours of travel to work, I revelled in the fact that I could stay home (away from people), wake up 10 minutes before work and when I left work, I had hours to get back to old hobbies or binge-watch all the new shows Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+Hotstar was coming out with.

The smile says it all - First outing after eight months at home, to get burgers.

Even as a predominantly science writer at Tech2, I am surrounded by all the latest gadgets and phones and our tech humans are very kind enough to allow us to take them for a spin. With that in mind, let's jump right into my small but mighty lockdown legends.

Dell Inspiron 14 laptop

Way before Corona, or as I like to call her, Miss Rona, came crashing our way, two of my laptops – a Samsung and my second-hand MacBook – crashed on me. So in January, I made my first big purchase since I began working and bought myself the Dell Inspiron 14 3000. With the 10th-generation Intel Core i5, it was only supposed to be used for binge-watching and doing the bare minimum of work, but that changed in March. I began to use her every day, at all odd hours and since then, she has not failed me. From dealing with some 20-odd tabs opened at once to attending webinars and Zoom calls and watching movies or falling into the deep pit of YouTube, this laptop has gone above the call of duty to get me through these months.

Asus X01 phone

As our tech hoomans have mentioned in this series, phones are fickle, impermanent things in our life. The Asus X01 is nothing to write home about. It is a decent phone with a semi-decent camera and a very simple/easy to use user interface. It has clean lines and is so lightweight, with pretty impressive battery life.

My sturdy steed, the Asus -X01. Image credit: Abigail Banerji

I would not have paid too much of heed to it if I wasn't stuck with it from the past nine months. The X01 has no airs, but I have dubbed it the 'Netflix phone' (for obvious reasons) and has become a trusty steed that is reliable, uncomplicated and extremely durable. Since it is so light, your fingers don't hurt from holding it for long binge sessions ,which is such a bonus.

iQOO 3 phone

Don't judge it too harshly (like I did), the 'i Quest On and On' 3 or the iQOO 3 is the most underrated smartphone I have used in my short stint here at Tech2. It has an unimaginable camera, a superb battery life and gives you a user experience that will leave you comparing all other phones to it. It is supposed to be a gaming phone with a special gaming mode and extra buttons to make your experience impeccable. I am no gamer, however; but you can read the review here.

The one downside to this phone is that you cannot download Netflix. It kind of soured my experience initially, but with the X01 standing in as my Netflix phone and my laptop furthering my streaming experience, I soon got over that hurdle.

With no other way to explain the incredible image quality, and since pictures speak a 1000 words, here are some samples that I took on my little excursion to Alibaug recently.

The newly introduced ro-ro between Mumbai and Alibaug was actually so far away, we weren't sure what ship it was. Here you can see the name - M2M ferries. Image credit: Abigail Banerji

JBL and Boat wireless earphones, Juarez JRM50 lapel mic

As someone who has grown up in a rambunctuous family, I am used to studying/working in noise. But I do need to block them out and having some lo-fi or instrumental piano music playing in the background is a must for my optimal working conditions.

While travelling in pre-Corona days, I usually reached for my Boat wireless earphones for one reason only – they would not get tangled up when boarding or exiting the Mumbai local trains during rush hour. They have a reasonable battery life but I usually end up forgetting to charge them and they end up dying at the most inopportune moments. The sound quality of the earphones isn’t the best, but it isn’t bad either. However, what really impressed me about the earphones is that while using them for my home workouts, they would stay snugly inside my ear, even during some of the rigorous workouts sessions.

The DIY, at home set up for the Tech2 Science podcast recordings. Image credit: Abigail Banerji

My JBL earphones, on the other hand, I have used every day during the lockdown. With three people working at home and constant phone/video calls and webinars, I needed something with a lot more noise-cancelling, but this did the job as well. Where they really shined was during our newly-launched Tech2 Science podcast recording. Paired with the Juarez JRM50 lapel mic, it really made my DIY at-home setup not too shabby, if I do say so myself.

Does a simple lapel mic and mini tripod count as tech? Not really; there are more hi-end gadgets around the office. But they sure did play an integral part in this lockdown – the mic along with the tripod helped me face my fears of being in front of a camera and made me realise that I had something important to say, and a platform to do it.

Amazon will soon launch Marathi language support on its platform following controversy in Maharashtra

E-commerce giant Amazon is working to bring in Marathi language support on its platform as well. The move comes after Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) wrote an open letter to Amazon’s CEO where it demanded language support for people living in Maharashtra. In the letter, the party also said that it will agitate against Amazon given that the company does not include the language support for the app as well as their website for customers in the state.

"We have no intentions of getting into a legal tussle with Amazon but for our mother tongue we as Maharashtrians can go to any extent. The agitation on social media platforms (#NoMarathi_No Amazon) is just the tip of the iceberg," says MNS leader Akhil Chitre in the letter.

The Seattle, Washington-based giant took to Twitter and wrote, "We are committed to enable Amazon online shopping experience across Indian languages including Marathi. Work has already begun to launch Marathi shopping experience & seller registration soon. We will continue to add more languages for enhanced customer & seller experience." Amazon has also shared a screenshot along with the tweet to suggest that the language support would soon go live on its platform.

Amazon Echo Dot

Meanwhile, Amazon has been working on adding language support for its various services. Right now, the e-commerce platform supports six languages in India and will be adding two more languages. Last month, the company also introduced Hindi language support for Alexa on Fire TV devices in India. The latest update by Amazon now allows Fire TV device users (inclusive of Fire TV Stick) to ask Alexa questions in Hindi. Until now, Alexa only had support for the English language.

Amazon has invested Rs 11,400 crore in India in the financial year 2019-2020

US e-commerce giant Amazon has pumped in over Rs 11,400 crore (about $1.5 billion) during FY 2019-20 across its marketplace, payments and wholesale business units in India to bolster its position in the country's burgeoning digital commerce market. The investments have been made even though most of Amazon's business units in India registered losses during the fiscal. Data analysis from regulatory filings by various Amazon entities showed that Amazon Seller Services, Amazon Wholesale (India), Amazon Pay (India) and Amazon Transportation Services saw their losses adding up to Rs 7,899 crore in FY20 as against a loss of Rs 7,014.5 crore in the preceding fiscal.

Amazon Seller Services, Amazon Wholesale (India), Amazon Pay (India) and Amazon Transportation Services had registered losses in FY20 at Rs 5,849.2 crore, Rs 133.2 crore, Rs 1,868.5 crore and Rs 48.1 crore, respectively.

Amazon Internet Services, which had clocked a net profit of Rs 71.1 crore in FY19, slipped into the red with a loss of Rs 20 lakh in FY20, the data showed.

Representational Image

(Also Read: Amazon internet services India falls into losses in fy20 even as revenue swells up 58 percent)

Filings showed that Amazon Pay's total expenses grew 62 percent to Rs 3,234.8 crore in FY20, while Amazon Seller Services saw its total expenses rising over 25 percent to Rs 16,877.1 crore in the said period.

In response to a detailed query sent to the company, an Amazon India spokesperson said: "We continue to be invested in India with a long-term view enabling customers in India to enjoy the ease and convenience of e-commerce and other digital products and services."

In January this year, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos had announced USD 1 billion (over Rs 7,000 crore) investment in India to help bring small and medium businesses online. Previously, the online retail giant had committed USD 5.5 billion investments in India, one of Amazon's most important markets outside of the US and a key growth driver.

Anchal Agarwal, CEO and Founder of business intelligence platform Tofler, said with the exception of Amazon Wholesale, other Amazon entities in India have expanded by about 40-50 percent in FY 2019-20.

"Amazon International has also been funding these businesses to provide adequate capital for expansion. Amazon has increased spending on advertising and promotion of Amazon Pay, the digital payments business. They are also stressing significantly on expansion of Amazon Seller business, the marketplace that grew by 40 percent in FY19-20," she said. However, the losses of the group have increased on account of increasing advertising and distribution expenses, she added.

On the funding front, Amazon Seller Services, the e-commerce marketplace unit in India - was the biggest beneficiary of the fund infusion, receiving Rs 8,408 crore in three tranches. The unit saw revenue from operations rising over 42 percent to Rs 10,847.6 crore in FY20 over the preceding fiscal.

Amazon Wholesale, which is the B2B unit, received Rs 360 crore funding, while Amazon Pay received Rs 2,705 crore in three tranches during FY20.

Amazon India's marketplace, payments, transport and cloud service units saw their cumulative revenue from operations rising 47 percent to Rs 19,275.8 crore in FY20 over the previous financial year.

Amazon Wholesale (India), however, saw its revenue from operations falling from Rs 11,231.6 crore in FY19 to Rs 3,384.6 crore in FY20.

In its filing, Amazon Wholesale (India) had attributed the drop in revenue to "new government regulation resulting in lower customer adoption." The filing noted that the company management is in process of expanding the business, and expressed confidence for future growth.

Amazon Internet Services saw revenue from operations rising 57.8 percent to Rs 4,161.6 crore, Amazon Pay (India) by 63.1 percent to Rs 1,315.7 crore, and Amazon Transportation Services by 42.7 percent to Rs 2,950.9 crore in FY20 over the previous fiscal.

Google Search starts testing new 'Short videos' search carousel, currently being piloted on mobile

Google had started testing Short Videos a few months back and now it seems that the test has been expanded to Search. Previously, it was revealed that the panel within Google Discover would showcase or highlight content from sites such as Instagram and TikTok within a scrollable carousel on Android devices. Now, with the extension of the new Short Videos to Google Search means that users may see a dedicated panel when searching for specific things on the desktop, according to a report in 9To5Google.

The Short Videos carousel is different from Google's Stories that rolled out in October 2020 to the Google Search app for iOS and Android.

Google Search app on mobile.

The Short Videos carousel is focused on aggregating social video from other platforms including Tagni, Trell as well as YouTube.

The report added that the Short Video carousel appears when users scroll past the Google Knowledge Base box and both Instagram and TikTok videos are available there.

A Google spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the feature was currently being piloted on mobile devices. However, the spokesperson clarified that it is a limited, early-stage feature.

The report further added that while one may not find the video carousel on every search query as of yet, over time, it could become an interesting tool for indexing and surfacing top video content from social media.

Lockdown Legends Part 3: Tech that got me through 2020 feat. Amazon Echo Show 8, Apple Watch SE, Dyson Pure Hot + Cool

Editor's Note: This story is part of a series about tech gadgets and devices that helped Team tech2 and some of our friends through the pandemic, lockdown, and the year 2020, in general.

Having spent close to 300 days indoors in 2020, my mind, body, and soul experienced chaos in many ways. Working, sleeping, eating, living in the same space for so many days made my house seem smaller, I experienced burnout, and it wasn’t easy to keep going. But, I did, because my mama didn’t raise no quitter (J/K, quit if you have to. No pressure. Whatever makes you happy!) While I was one of the lucky few who spent this quarantine at home with family, we often forget our privilege in the moment, and so, on various occasions, I turned to technology for comfort and sanity.

This little fluffy kitty, Master Shifu, was also crucial to Nandini's survival in 2020.

While as a tech journalist, I am often using several kinds of devices at once, 2020 wasn’t exactly the same for me professionally, so my dependence skewed toward some tech more than others. And as the year ends, I want to give huge props to my Amazon Echo Show 8 and my Apple Watch SE, for keeping me entertained and pushing me to stay healthy.

Since the beginning of the lockdown and to date, my day begins with Alexa waking me up to Ganesh Atharvashisha and Mahishasurmardini Stotram, followed by the top hits in the US and then I go on experimenting with and exploring music all day.

My Echo Show 8 sits on my work desk. It is switched on first thing in the morning and it stops only in the evening when I watch shows on the TV, and sometimes it’s playing until I fall asleep.

I have honestly never been so up-to-date with every song released in India and the US. In 2020, I hear new songs the day they release – 2019 Nandini would be so impressed by 2020 Nandini.

Amazon Echo Show 8. Image: tech2/Nandini Yadav

The Echo Show 8 has been a wonderful companion. I especially like the device because I always wanted a smart speaker with a display because it doubles as a clock, you can watch videos on it, watch news, read lyrics. However, with the older generation Echo Show you couldn’t switch off the camera, and that bit kind of made me a little uncomfortable with having the device in my room. But the Echo Show 8 comes with a shutter for the camera, so I like to keep the camera shut, and turn the mic off after I have found my playlist for the day.

My other hero device during the lockdown was my Apple Watch SE. During the lockdown, some of us – unconsciously  and many of us – happily – turned into sedentary beings. Home workouts aren’t easy to follow when you live in apartments; you don’t want to disturb your downstairs neighbours. And workouts are even harder to follow when you live in a place like Delhi, and the winter has set in.

via GIPHY

With Apple Watch SE, the fitness rings kept me motivated. I had a goal to achieve. And even if I couldn’t get a proper workout in, standing for a minute every hour, mindful breathing, and step counts really helped me squeeze in some physical activity into my day. Also, if I am being honest, the watch almost shames you sometimes with the “You didn’t get any workout done yesterday” prompts, and I am scared of being called a failure like that.

Besides keeping me active, the Apple Watch SE helped me break the large, medium and small screens vicious cycle.

The smartwatch lets me attend to most of my notifications and calls. It also helped me reduce the time I spent mindlessly scrolling through Instagram. I focused on work much better on days I wore my watch.

And finally, a gadget that has unfortunately become vital for a quality lifestyle in a city like Delhi – an air purifier.

Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Air Purifier. Image: tech2/Nandini Yadav

If I absolutely must find a silver lining in the whole mess that 2020 was, I’d say that I think I breathed more clean air this year than I have in the past. Starting in March 2020, the air purifiers in my house have run 24x7. I can count on my fingers the number of times I have left the house in 2020. My annual winter congestion (sounds like a festival, because it really returns right on schedule every year) was way milder than what I am used to. I also contracted COVID-19 in October, and while there is no medical proof that it works, I genuinely feel that the clean air in my house helped in my recovery. With the winters setting in, I have also been using the air purifier as a heater, which has been crucial in surviving Delhi winters cooped up in the house all day.

Picture this: I wake up, put on my Apple Watch SE, my Amazon Echo Show 8 plays my favourite music, my room isn’t blanketed with smog, it isn’t freezing at 8 degrees, I dance around my room, I meditate and do mindful breathing, I focus on my work (while listening to some good music), I do some more happy dancing once my work is over, my fitness rings close in to the daily goals, and I end my day happy, entertained and comfortable. That’s not a life I can take for granted!

Reliance Jio will make all domestic voice calls for free starting 1 January 2021 as IUC regime comes to an end

With the interconnect usage charges (IUC) regime for domestic voice calls coming to an end, Reliance Jio on Thursday said that all calls from its network to other networks anywhere in India will be free from 1 January 2021. As per the telecom regulator's directions, the ''Bill and Keep'' regime is being implemented in the country from 1 January 2021, thereby ending IUC charges for all domestic voice calls, it said in a statement.

"Honouring its commitment to revert off-net domestic voice-call charges to zero, as soon as IUC charges are abolished, Jio will once again make all off-net domestic voice calls free, starting 1st January 2021. On-net domestic voice calls have always been free on the Jio network," it added.

Put simply, off-net calls refer to calls that terminate in other networks.

Over the last one year or so, Reliance Jio was charging customers 6 paise per minute for voice calls made to rival phone networks, but compensated subscribers by giving free data of equal value.

Amazon acquires podcast producer Wondery, will be incorporated into Amazon Music

Amazon says it has signed a deal to acquire the hit podcast production firm Wondery, in a move which boosts the US tech giant's efforts to round out its offerings from its music platform. Wondery, which produces popular podcasts such as Dirty John, Dr Death, and The Shrink Next Door, will be incorporated into Amazon Music, which is ramping up its efforts to compete with rivals like Spotify and began offering podcasts earlier this year.

"Together with Wondery, we will continue to bring more customers to streaming as we expand selection and ensure we are a destination for our customers to find, discover, and listen to the creators and artists they enjoy," Amazon's music team said in a blog post.

"Wondery is an innovative podcast publisher with a track record of creating and producing top-rated podcasts that entertain and educate listeners."

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but reports this month said Wondery was seeking $300 million (approximately Rs 2,200 crores).

Amazon Music acquires Wondery

The deal, which has not yet been finalised, will allow Amazon Music subscribers to listen to Wondery podcasts through a variety of providers, an Amazon statement said.

Industry tracker Podtrac ranked Wondery as being the fourth most listened to podcast publisher in the US in November, with slightly more than 9 million people tuning in to audio programs it hosts.

Podcasts have boomed in popularity in recent years, with people tuning in to hear compelling real or scripted stories as well as interviews.

The move comes with Amazon facing increased scrutiny from antitrust enforcers for its growing dominance over key sectors of the economy as it expands in retail and streaming media.

Japan plans to create wooden satellites which they hope will cut down on space junk

A Japanese startup called Sumitomo Forestry has teamed up with researchers from the Kyoto University, to work on a wooden satellite, reported BBC. While the entire plan is in a nascent stage, the project aims at tackling the increasing threat of space debris. Sumitomo Forestry is currently working on testing the use of wood materials in space and soon they will be experimenting with wood in extreme locations on Earth. Going ahead with their research, the two teams plan to launch the world's first satellite made out of wood in 2023.

Artist illustration of the junk that exists in space. Image credit: Wikipedia

The report says that wooden satellites were a better alternative to the existing ones as these would burn up after entering the atmosphere without releasing any harmful substances. No waste will be created and the risk of space junk falling back on Earth can be lessened.

Takao Doi, a professor at Kyoto University and Japanese astronaut, was quoted by BBC to state that all the satellites that re-enter Earth’s atmosphere at present “burn and create tiny alumina particles which will float in the upper atmosphere for many years”. This can prove to be harmful in the long run, something they aspire to prevent by using wood as their material.

Although the company has not revealed the name of the wood for R& D purposes, they are working on developing wooden materials that are “highly resistant to temperature changes and sunlight”. The report also drew attention to the threat the space junk poses. It mentions that in the coming years, more and more countries are going to send more satellites. But already of the total number of satellites circling our planet, about 60 per cent of them are defunct according to the World Economic Forum (WEF).

A report by ARS Technica however pointed out that just using wood for satellites is not really going to make a difference. The article cites figures to suggest a huge amount of space junk consists of the booster or the equipment used to propel the satellites into space. Even if wood is incorporated, this number is not going to be affected. Although if the satellite de-orbits, the wood will completely burn down, but this will not stop some tiny bits of aluminium from getting into the mix as many of them can come from the rockets.

EU still holds out on granting approval to Oxford-AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine

The coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, which was approved Wednesday in Britain, is unlikely to get a green light in the European Union in the next month, according to the European Medicines Agency (EMA). The regulator, charged with overseeing vaccines' authorisation in the EU before they can be marketed, approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on December 21. It is expected to rule on Moderna's vaccine on January 6. But an EU ruling on the AstraZeneca-Oxford jab will take some time.

"Additional scientific information on issues related to quality, safety and efficacy of the vaccine is deemed necessary to support the rigour required for a conditional marketing authorisation (CMA) and this has been requested from the company," the EMA said in a statement. "Further information from the ongoing clinical trials is also expected from January."

The Amsterdam-based agency earlier told AFP that it had not yet received any formal marketing authorisation and that it had set no timetable for approving the vaccine.

The regulator's deputy executive director Noel Walthion told Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad on Tuesday that a possible approval in January is "unlikely".

The AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine is currently undergoing a "rolling review" which allows the EMA to examine safety and efficacy data as they are released, even before a formal application for authorisation is filed by the manufacturer.

This procedure speeds up the evaluation of a marketing authorisation application once it is made, the EMA said.

The agency said Wednesday it is "aware that the UK MHRA has granted a temporary authorisation of supply of the vaccine in the emergency use setting, which is distinct from a marketing authorisation."

An AstraZeneca spokesperson told AFP it "has submitted a full data package to support an application for conditional marketing authorisation for the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine to the European Medicines Agency."

The spokesperson added: "AstraZeneca has been submitting data on a rolling basis and will continue to work closely with the EMA to support the start of a formal CMA application process."

Britain is the first country in the world to approve the vaccine, which is cheaper to produce and easier to store and transport than the Pfizer-BioNTech jab.

For EU countries, it is up to the European Commission in Brussels to issue the final green light after EMA approval.

Inoculations with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine began in the 27-member bloc over the weekend.

Solar Orbiter approaches Venus in a flyby, conducts some planetary observations

The joint US-European Solar Orbiter spacecraft reached its closest approach to Venus on 27 December, at 6.09 pm IST (27 December at  7:39 am EST). The spacecraft managed to go as close as 7,500 kilometres from the top of the planet's cloud tops, reported Space.com. Speaking at the press briefing, Daniel Müller, project scientist for the mission at the European Space Agency said that the Solar Orbiter is a mission not designed specifically to take Venus observations, but since they are always looking for bonus opportunities to do science, they will be doing observations when they approach Venus.

During the flyby, scientists were able to gather data using the spacecraft's magnetometer, radio and plasma waves instrument and some of the sensors available on the energetic particle detector.

Tim Horbury, a physicist at Imperial College London and principal investigator of one of Solar Orbiter's instruments had stated that at the distance the Space Orbiter is able to reach, one of the key things that they will be looking at is how Venus interacts with the solar wind that is flowing past it.

Since 27 December's flyby was the Solar Orbiter's first tryst with Venus, the team was not sure what to expect from it and will take a few days to dig into the data the instruments gathered.

The Solar Orbiter's main objective is to perform close-up, high-resolution studies of the Sun and inner heliosphere. It is intended to brave the fierce heat and carry its telescopes to just one-quarter of Earth's distance from the Sun. At that distance, the Solar Orbiter will be exposed to sunlight 13 times more intense than what we feel on Earth.

Apple is currently working on a foldable iPhone that is likely to launch in 2022-23: Report

Apple is working on a foldable phone and it is going to be similar to Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G in terms of design, revealed a recent leak. The tip added that the Cupertino-based firm is looking at a 2022-23 timeframe to launch the product, if it actually does. Youtuber Jon Prosser said in a recent YouTube video of Front Page Tech channel that Apple was currently in the early stages of development and was testing the outer shell of the future iPhone at a factory in Shenzhen, China.

Apple Foldable phone. Image:

Testing the hinge mechanism is important as many foldable phones have failed to withstand continuous flips upon use.

The product will fold down like a clamshell, revealing a wider screen once unfolded. Like Samsung flip phones, this device will also have a smaller screen on the outer panel. The video clip also shared a concept image of the folding iPhone for making it easier to visualize. He cited his sources to state that Apple was working on two devices and was going to select one after preliminary tests to move ahead with.

Prosser made sure that Apple was not planning to introduce the device just next year, maybe in 2022 or even 2023. This gives the company to fully test the limits and release a strong foldable phone. Also, such a wide time period gives the smartphone brand the scope to go ahead with a completely different design in the long run.

Apple has been working on multiple concepts for bendable displays for many years now. In 2019, an Apple patent application had come to surface which hinted at a three-fold form factor. The illustrations found on the patent application showed that the potential iPhone might come with both an inward as well as an outward bend. While many other firms have been reported to work on foldable phone designs, Samsung, Microsoft, Huawei and Motorola are some of the names that currently have models out in the market.

Lava to launch 'Made in India' smartphones on 7 January: All we know so far

Lava Mobiles is surging ahead to make most of the Atma Nirbhar Bharat scheme with the launch of Made in India smartphones soon. The homegrown company has started to market the launch with social media posts and a video from their top executives. According to a Twitter update, Lava is going to unveil their new smartphones in a virtual event on 7 January, 2021. With the tagline ‘Ab Duniya Dekhegi’ (Now the world will see), a teaser video of the upcoming video said: “The day when Smartphone industry will never be the same again”.

Lava logo-1280

In another follow-up video clip, Sunil Rana, the President and Business Head of the company, can be seen inviting everyone to the live event which will be telecast on the YouTube and Facebook handles of Lava Mobiles. It is scheduled to begin at 12 pm. The caption to the tweet read: “Come join us on 7th January, 2021 on Lava YouTube and Facebook handles to witness the game changing moment in Smartphone Industry.” With the use of the hashtag ‘Proudly Indian’, it can be expected that the firm is aiming to attract the ‘Vocal for Local’ sentiment of the country, at a time the Indian smartphone industry is ruled by several Chinese companies.

Though nothing much was revealed about the upcoming smartphones, 91Mobiles has reported that Lava is going to launch four new phones. These are going to belong to a wide range with the cheapest model starting at Rs 5,000 and the costliest at Rs 20,000. If these quotations are to be believed then it seems like Lava is trying to capture every price point and solidifying their position in the industry.

Lava is following in the steps of Micromax, another Indian smartphone firm, which has recently made a comeback with their In series. The Micromax In Note 1 and In 1b were released in India in early November and were priced in the range of Rs 7,000 and Rs 13,000.

COVID-19 cases in Wuhan might've been 10 times higher then official data showed: Chinese CDC report

The number of coronavirus cases in the Chinese city where the pathogen was first detected may have been 10 times higher than official figures suggest, according to a study by health authorities in Wuhan. About 4.4 percent of the city's 11 million residents had developed antibodies against the virus causing Covid-19 by April, the report by the Chinese Centre for Disease Control (CDC) said. That correlates to around 480,000 infections in Wuhan by April, nearly 10 times the official tally to date of 50,000 cases in the city.

China has faced a barrage of criticism at home and abroad over its initial handling of the virus, including attempts to silence whistle-blowers and not reporting any cases for days in early January amid high-level political consultations.

On Monday, citizen journalist Zhang Zhan was jailed for four years for reporting on conditions inside Wuhan during the height of the outbreak.

The discrepancy revealed by the CDC's data may "point to potential underreporting due to the chaos in late January and early February, when a large number of people were not tested or were not tested accurately for Covid-19," Huang Yanzhong, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), told AFP.

Qin Ying, a serological expert from the CDC told AFP on Wednesday that disparities in data were not unique to China.

"Several countries have already published similar serological surveys and... in most instances the number of people with antibodies against the coronavirus was several times higher than the confirmed case count," Qin said.

"So this kind of disparity is a widespread phenomenon."

The CDC added that only 0.44 percent of the population in central Hubei province outside of Wuhan exhibited antibodies for the virus, suggesting that the 77-day lockdown on the city may have helped prevent the spread of the disease.

The findings of the survey of more than 34,000 people across the country conducted in April was only released late Monday.

China does not include asymptomatic cases in its official tally, which could also explain the discrepancy between the total confirmed cases and the actual number infected.

The country's total number of cases stands at 87,027 with 4,634 deaths, according to data from the National Health Commission on Wednesday.

China has largely curbed the virus at home, and was the only major economy to report positive economic growth this year as restrictions on businesses and internal travel were lifted.

Even in Wuhan the "rate is not as high as that in New York City (23 percent by September), which may suggest the (Chinese) government containment efforts were speedy and effective", Huang said.

Officials have also rushed to test tens of millions of people to squash local mini-outbreaks.

Air pollution related disease, deaths cost India Rs 260,000 crores in economic loss: report

A new study has looked at the number of deaths and illnesses caused by air pollution, both indoor and outdoor, during the year 2019 as well as the financial impact it had. The researchers stated that the relation between air pollution and the harmful effect it has on a person's health is well known but the related economic outcome is not very well researched. The researchers also calculated the economic impact of air pollution for every state of India. The study was a collaboration between researchers from AIIMS, ICMR and IIT-Delhi and is titled ‘Global Burden of Disease Study, 2019’. It has been published in the journal Lancet Planetary Health.

It was found that air pollution in India caused 1.67 million deaths which are almost 18 percent of the total deaths in the country. From the 1.67 million deaths, 0·98 million were caused by ambient particulate matter pollution and 0·61 million were caused by household air pollution.

The study found that the main source of ambient particulate matter pollution in India are residential and commercial biomass burning, windblown mineral dust, coal-burning for energy generation, industrial emissions, agricultural stubble burning, waste burning, construction activities, brick kilns, transport vehicles, and diesel generators. Household air pollution is caused by solid fuels used in cooking, like wood, cattle dung, agricultural residues, coal, and charcoal.

Ground-level ambient ozone is produced when pollutants emitted from transport vehicles, power plants, factories, and other sources react in the presence of sunlight with hydrocarbons emitted from diverse sources.

They found that while the death rates due to household pollution decreased by 64·2 percent from 1990 to 2019, deaths caused by ambient particulate matter pollution increased by 115·3 percent and those caused by ambient ozone pollution also increased by 139·2 percent.

Prof Balram Bhargava, Director General, ICMR remarked in a statement, “Various government schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and the Unnat Chulha Abhiyan have aided in reducing household air pollution in India, the benefits of which are suggested in the reducing death rate from it as seen in this paper. Such success encourages us to enhance efforts to reduce outdoor air pollution as well.”

Lung diseases made up 40 percent of morbities caused by air pollution while 60 percent of diseases were caused by ischemic heart disease, stroke, diabetes, neonatal deaths related to preterm birth.

Economic loss

According to the study, the economic loss due to premature deaths was Rs 2,12,436 crore ($28.8 billion) and when people got sick because of air pollution, it cost us Rs 59,010 crore ($8 billion) which made up a whopping total of 1.4 percent of the Gross Domestic Product or Rs 260,000 crores ($ 36.8 billion).

Gurugram’s air quality was 17 times poorer than the prescribed safe limit by the World Health Organisation (WHO). image credit: Vinay Gupta.

Prof Lalit Dandona, Director of the India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative, who is National Chair of Population Health at ICMR, Professor at PHFI, and senior author of this paper said, “Improved methods in this paper have led to a higher estimate of the impact of air pollution on health and disease in India than previously estimated. The economic impact of this health loss due to lost productivity is huge at 1.4 percent of the country’s GDP in 2019, besides a roughly estimated expenditure of 0.4 percent of the GDP on the treatment of air pollution-related diseases."

The health and economic impact of air pollution is highest in the less developed states of India, an inequity that should be addressed,” he added.

According to the study, the economic loss was highest in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. Delhi had the highest per-capita economic loss due to air pollution, followed by Haryana in 2019. The economic loss as a percentage of the state GDP was higher in the northern and central India states, with the highest in Uttar Pradesh (2.2 percent of GDP) and Bihar (two percent of GDP).

What can the government do?

According to a statement by ICMR, India is making good progress in their economy and development and it will be able to improve if air pollution is reduced. However, the study also states that due to premature deaths and loss of output due to diseases, India's aspiration to be a five trillion dollar economy by 2024 could come could to a grinding halt.

If state governments put in place proper strategies, there could be a reduction of air pollution that would also lead to better health of the people which will in turn also positively affect the economy.

Dr Pushpam Kumar, Chief Environmental Economist, United Nations Environment Programme, who was behind the conceptualisation of the economic analysis in this study said, “These estimates of economic loss (benefits of avoidance) as a result of air pollution across different states of India provide extremely useful insights to central and state-level decision-makers who would find that the investment in pollution control not only yield attractive return in terms of prevention of loss of life but achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of good health, sustainable cities, climate action, social justice and inclusive economic growth besides others."

From Vu to Xiaomi to Hisense: Here are the top 5 budget 4K Smart TVs of 2020 in India

Smart TVs have been great companions this year during the lockdown. For most people, this meant binge-watching stuff on Netflix, Prime Video etc. For yours truly, in addition to that, it was also about testing and reviewing them, as my home was transformed into a TV showroom for months, courtesy of innumerable test units that took refuge there during that period. And then some more arrived once the lockdown was relaxed. However, there were a select few that impressed me more than others with their performance and feature set, and as a result made their way to our list of top 5 budget 4K Smart TVs of 2020 priced under Rs 60,000.

Best budget 4K Smart TVs of 2020

Vu Cinema TV 50CA

The Cinema TV 4K range released by Vu at the start of this year was easily one of the best of 2020. The fact that very few got close to even matching its performance in the subsequent quarters speaks volumes about the quality of the product. We reviewed the 50-inch model from the series and were thoroughly impressed with its picture quality, and even more so with the sound. It was perhaps the first to bring Dolby Vision to budget TVs, and to the sub-30K price range in India then. Its UI tweaks remain refreshingly versatile for Android TV OS.

Vu-tv-1024

The panel with Vu’s Pixelium Glass technology is quite bright, resulting in good contrast in HDR content. Full HD and 4K videos look great on this TV, and even 720p content is upscaled reasonably well. What sets it apart from the majority of the competition is its 40W speaker system. There is noticeable warmth in the sound and ample clarity in vocals. The speakers are tuned well out of the box, and sound good for different content types ranging from movies to music to news. With such a fine blend of features and performance, the Vu Cinema TV was bound to be a box office hit in the year theatres were shut for most part.

Price: Rs 29,999 onwards

Hisense 55A71F

Hisense debuted in India in the last quarter of this year and made waves straight away with their impressive A71F series. Just like the Vu Cinema TV, the Hisense 55A71F (Review) model that we reviewed was high on picture and sound quality. The stakes were raised even higher with the inclusion of Dolby Atmos audio in addition to Dolby Vision support. I generally don’t take the former seriously on TV speakers, but it does make a difference on this certified Android TV, and you can experience more than a hint of positional audio. Speaking of audio, this is another smart TV with very impressive sound quality.

Hisense 55A71F

A pair of bottom-firing speakers rated at 30 Watts RMS deliver some seriously good audio output. The output is loud and clear, with a surprisingly good amount of bass for TV speakers. The picture quality is equally impressive with vibrant colours and contrast across the board. The Hisense 55A71F allows you to adjust sound and picture settings on the fly while viewing content from any source or app at the press of a button, something very few Android TVs let you do. The importance of this, when fine-tuning the video or audio, cannot be stressed enough. For such versatility and performance, this Hisense TV finds itself in our list of best budget TVs this year, soon after launch.

Price: Rs 38,990

Kodak 50CA7077/ Thomson OATH Pro series

Another couple of budget brands improved drastically this year, and released a stellar series each. The Kodak CA series and Thomson OATH Pro series of certified Android TVs are very impressive for the price. Both series are pretty much the same, and manufactured by the same brand licensee - SPPL in India. We got our hands on the Kodak 50CA7077 model (Review) and were mighty impressed with the picture quality of its 10-bit IPS 4K panel. There was a marked improvement in the sound too, compared to its predecessors. There were some UI and minor performance issues in the initial models, but that seems to have been fixed now in the subsequent updates.

kodak tv UI-1280

UI issues aside, the picture quality of this TV was always excellent, with good contrast, lively colours and wide viewing angles. The Kodak CA and Thomson OATH Pro series support Dolby Vision too, and content encoded in that format looks brilliant for their price class. Lastly, their pricing is extremely affordable, adding to the value quotient of the smart TVs. For a solid all-round performance and for that impressive panel, we offer these TVs a place on this list.

Price: Rs 30,999 to 33,999

Xiaomi Mi TV Q1 (55) QLED TV

Here’s the first and more recent of the two budget QLED TVs in this list. The Xiaomi Mi TV Q1 (55) is more future-ready courtesy of its powerful hardware, latest version of Android TV OS, extra storage and most importantly, connectivity options. It has a lot going for it, starting with a sharp and vibrant picture, support for premium HDR formats like Dolby Vision and HDR10+, much better sound as compared to its predecessors and a pleasant design with a metallic frame.

This is the first Android 10 TV we have got our hands on this year. As I touched upon, it has faster Mediatek processing hardware at its core with a Mali G52 MP2 GPU and 32 GB of internal storage. But the clincher is support for HDMI 2.1 with eARC, ALLM and a claimed 5 ms input lag that makes this TV great to pair with the latest consoles from Microsoft and Sony. This TV creates history by being the first from Xiaomi to provide an option to mute the TV (Oh yes, you read that right!), which helped its case further as a pick on our 2020 budget Smart TV list.

Price: Rs 54,999

iFFALCON (TCL) 55H71 QLED TV

The iFFALCON (TCL) 55H71 (Review) is a well-priced budget QLED TV with good picture and sound and some smart design elements. It was also the first to breach the Rs 50,000 barrier in India at launch for a 55-inch QLED TVs running certified Android, and that’s an achievement. Since it was released much earlier this year, it misses out on a few newer features like HDMI 2.1 and Android 10 out of the box, but its overall performance is on par with that of the Mi QLED TV. This smart TV supports popular HDR formats like Dolby Vision and HDR10+, as well as Dolby Atmos for audio.

The 55H71 also has a handful of cool features up its sleeve like far-field mics for true hands-free voice commands without the need for a remote. The design is quite smart and well thought out with an option to connect the desktop stands near the edges of the TV or at the centre to save space, and place it on a much smaller table. You also get access to sound and picture settings on the fly that the Xiaomi TV lacks, and is a few thousands cheaper too. All things considered, it makes a strong case for itself to book a spot on this list.

Honourable mention:

Realme Smart TV SLED 55

SLED technology looks quite promising, and this Realme TV proved to be an impressive retail prototype for the display technology with a vibrant, yet soothing picture that puts noticeably less strain on the eyes. The clean Android UI is fast and lag-free, but could have done with a few more audio/video adjustment tweaks to make the TV smarter. Nonetheless, a solid first attempt.

UK approves Oxford-AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine; Britain to get 40 million doses by end of March

London: The coronavirus vaccine designed by scientists at the University of Oxford and produced by AstraZeneca was on Wednesday approved for human use by the UK’s independent regulator.

The approval by Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) means the vaccine is both safe and effective.

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) was already lining up thousands of medics and volunteers to be ready to deliver jabs up and down the country.

The vaccine, which also has a tie-up with the Serum Institute of India, was being evaluated by the MHRA after the final cut of data was submitted by the government last Monday.

It comes as a senior UK scientist pinpointed the Oxford vaccine as a real gamechanger, which could see the country achieve herd immunity as a result of vaccination against the deadly virus by the summer months of 2021.

"The people that have been vaccinated will be protected within a matter of weeks and that's very important,” Professor Calum Semple, a respiratory disease expert and member of the government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), told the BBC.

Britain has ordered 100 million doses of the jab, with 40 million expected to be available by the end of March.

AstraZeneca chief Pascal Soriot has stressed that researchers have found the "winning formula" using two doses of the vaccine, ahead of the final results being published.

He has raised hopes that the jabs are more effective than first thought and should be effective against a new variant of the coronavirus that is now causing havoc in most parts of the UK.

From Vu to Xiaomi to Realme: Here are the top 5 budget 4K Smart TVs of 2020 in India
